WASHINGTON— Dioceses across the country will be welcoming thousands of people into the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil Masses on the evening of April 20th. As the culmination of the Easter Triduum, the Vigil celebrates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While people can become Catholic at any time of the year, the Easter Vigil is a particularly appropriate moment for adult catechumens to be baptized and for already-baptized Christians to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church. Parishes welcome these new Catholics through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
Many of the dioceses across the nation have reported their numbers of people who intend to become Catholic on Saturday to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Based on these reports, more than 37,000 people are expected to be welcomed into the Church at Easter Vigil Masses.
Prior to beginning the RCIA process, an individual comes to some knowledge of Jesus Christ, considers his or her relationship with Jesus Christ and is usually attracted in some way to the Catholic Church. Then during the RCIA process, which typically lasts nine months or more, a person learns the teachings of the Catholic Church in a more formal way and discerns that he or she is ready to commit to living according to these beliefs. Thousands of people have already passed through this process and are ready to take this step on Saturday in parishes throughout the country.
Two distinct groups of people will be initiated into the Catholic Church. Catechumens, who have never been baptized, will receive Baptism, Confirmation and first Communion at the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil. Candidates, who have already been baptized in another Christian tradition, will enter the Church through a profession of faith and reception of Confirmation and the Eucharist.
For example, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the largest in the United States, will welcome 1,560 catechumens and 913 candidates; the Archdiocese of San Francisco will welcome 174 catechumens and 175 candidates; and the Diocese of San Diego will welcome 306 catechumens and 806 candidates.
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will welcome 1,512 catechumens and 631 candidates. Among them will be Alfredo Acosta, who is experiencing both intense sorrow and joy over the past two years that led him to become a Catholic. He suffered the loss of his two younger brothers who passed away, but then he also celebrated the birth of his son, Benjamin, now 18-months old. “My wife Gricelda is a cradle Catholic. She was born into her faith. Then we baptized our son last year, so I wanted to be able to share our faith with both of them,” Acosta said. Other catechumens and candidates say they were also inspired by the witness of Catholics in their lives
Other archdioceses and dioceses report numbers as follows: Archdiocese of Washington: 455 catechumens and 183 candidates; Atlanta: 645 catechumens, 1,181 candidates; Dallas: 1,196 catechumens, 1,399 candidates; Fort Worth: 600 catechumens, 500 candidates; Corpus Christi: 130 catechumens, 43 candidates; Tyler: 101 catechumens, 190 candidates; Charlotte: 724 catechumens, 1,284 candidates; Venice in Florida: 148 catechumens, 120 candidates; Archdiocese of New Orleans: 152 catechumens, 161 candidates; Columbus: 173 catechumens, 227 candidates; Erie: 51 catechumens, 80 candidates; Baton Rouge: 158 catechumens, 300 candidates; Orlando: 514 catechumens, 482 candidates; Monterrey: 297 catechumens; Crookston: 7 catechumens, 33 candidates; St. Augustine: 174 catechumens, 315 candidates; Rockville Centre: 272 catechumens; Arlington, VA: 285 catechumens, 277 candidates; Salina: 33 catechumens, 88 candidates; Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis: 205 catechumens, 319 candidates; Archdiocese of Newark: 411 catechumens, 58 candidates; Archdiocese of Oklahoma City: 262 catechumens, 324 candidates; Syracuse: 48 catechumens, 59 candidates.

Christian Post: Minutes after Sunday School class said they would die for Christ, half killed in Sri Lankan bomb blast
HOLY MARTYRS, PRAY FOR US!
News Source: Christian Post
Just minutes after expressing their willingness to die for Christ, half the children from one Sunday School class at Zion Church in Batticaloa were reportedly killed in the Easter Sunday suicide bomb attacks in Sri Lanka.
“Today was an Easter Sunday school at the church and we asked the children how many of you willing to die for Christ? Everyone raised their hands," Caroline Mahendran, a Sunday School teacher at the church, said, according to Israeli public figure Hananya Naftali. "Minutes later, they came down to the main service and the blast happened. Half of the children died on the spot.”
The report comes as the death toll from the bomb attacks on several churches and luxury hotels in the island nation, where Christians make up less than 10 percent of the 20 million population, rose to nearly 300 Monday with at least 500 wounded.
Fr. Kumaran, a pastor at Zion Church, told Times of India that he witnessed the death of many of the children shortly after arguing with the suicide bombing suspect he did not recognize.
It was about 8:30 a.m., Kumaran said, when he saw the suicide bombing suspect carrying a bag at the steps of the church already filled with worshipers.
"I asked him who he was and his name. He said he was a Muslim and wanted to visit the church," Kumaran said.
Kumaran said he was ushered away from the encounter by other priests because it was getting late for Mass. As he walked toward the podium he heard an explosion. When he turned around, the blood of his congregants, including many from the children’s Sunday School class, was splattered on the church walls.
"Twenty-eight people were killed, among them 12 children. Two are critical," a distressed Kumaran told the publication.
Arasaratnam Verl, 41, said his 13-year-old son, V. Jackson, who is also his only child, was standing near the church entrance after attending the Sunday School class. Jackson was killed instantly.
"My elder sister was killed too. My two younger sisters and my brother-in-law are critical," Verl, a taxi driver, told Times of India.
Verl said his friend, Ramesh, who had also questioned the suicide bombing suspect and “pushed the man outside the church door," also died too as the man blew himself up shortly after that.
“I have never heard the sound of a bomb explosion before. We initially thought it was the burst of a tire,” S. Vikash, 21, a medical representative who lives near the church, said. "When we realized it was an explosion, we followed the sound of fire engines and ambulances. The scene was terrifying. There was blood and body parts strewn all over. It was heart-rending to see the bodies of children."
Outside Zion Church, the bombings in Sri Lanka on Sunday also targeted St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, the capital; St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo; as well as high-end hotels in Colombo, including the Shangri-La, the Cinnamon Grand and the Kingsbury.
Fr. Kanapathipillai Deivendiran, who was scheduled to deliver the Easter Day message at Zion Church on Sunday, told The Hindu had he not been running late, he may have been killed too.
“I went a little after 9 a.m. I was a few minutes late or you will not be speaking to me now,” he said. “I didn’t know that there had been a blast a few minutes before that, I just walked into the premises. As I entered, I was shaken by the sight — walls had collapsed completely, there were bodies all over the floor,” he said.

glesia Ni Cristo: The controverisal Filipino sect targeting Africa (Asia by Africa)
Article from Asia by Africa
Described as a cult by its detractors, Iglesia Ni Cristo has been implicated in criminal activity, including assassinations in the Philippines: now it’s setting its sights on Africa.
Just the Basics
- Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) is a Filipino megachurch founded over a century ago whose founder claims to be God’s last messenger
- The INC has been implicated in criminal activities and murders and maintains strict control over the lives of its adherents
- The church has spread across the world and is focusing its attention on Africa, presenting potential dangers to local communities
On Sunday mornings in South Africa churches across the country are packed with the faithful. In one neighbourhood in Cape Town, parishioners make the journey to the local church. Devoid of a steeple and surrounded by a white picket fence, the church exudes an unassuming air. Donning their Sunday best, worshippers file into the church, passing under a large seal emblazoned with the words Iglesia ni Cristo.
To anyone casting a casual glance, the phrase might be in Latin, a common enough occurence in many churches. Closer observation reveals something surprising: the writing is not in Latin, not even in Spanish - it’s Tagalog, the main language of the Philippines. Inside, the Southeast Asian hints are even more visible - the preacher leading the congregation is Filipino; one of many who have travelled to South Africa (and beyond) to spread the good news.
Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) - or the Church of Christ in English - is a sect from the Philippines that has set its sights on global expansion, with Africa seen as a key growth market. Despite being relative newcomers to Africa, back in the Philippines, the INC is a force to be reckoned with, boasting millions of followers and wielding considerable ecclesiastical and political power. The first INC congregation in South Africa was founded in 1977 by Rogelio M. Rafals, a doctor with the UN Development Program. Initially seeking out fellow Filipinos in the area, Rafals eventually received permission from the INC back in the Philippines to minister to the local population as well.
By 2015, the INC had a presence in nine African countries, with that number jumping to sixteen just a year later. 2018 has seen further rapid growth, with INC General Auditor Gilcerio B. Santos Jr. stating that “we’re sweeping both Northern and Southern Africa as we reach out to INC members and non-members alike.” Whereas the activities of Iglesia Ni Cristo look like yet another wave of foreign missionary work in Africa, the INC’s controversial reputation makes their expansion into Africa of particular concern.
Iglesia Ni Cristo and the personality cult of its Executive Minister
In order to understand the INC’s background and why its overseas expansion is viewed with suspicion by some, we need to leave Africa for the time being and return to the Philippines. The brainchild of one Felix Y. Manalo, the INC came into being in 1914 with Manalo as the church’s executive minister. INC teaching exalts Manalo as God’s last messenger, and that only members of the Church will be saved come the Rapture, for (in the INC’s view) all other Christian denominations have watered down Christ’s teachings.
“It’s comforting to know that we have salvation already promised because we are part of [Iglesia Ni Cristo],” says Johannesburg INC member Jabulile Mbonambi. “If I was told tomorrow that I have to go to a very deserted area just so that I could be a part of anything to do with the Church, it doesn’t matter. I won’t even think twice. I’ll just go because my membership mean my life to me.”
Claims about the exclusivity of salvation are commonplace, with many Christian denominations viewing other sects as residing outside the ‘true church’. Manalo’s claims about being the penultimate prophet (and the INC’s unitarianism - the rejection of the Trinity and Jesus’ divinity) are definitely harder to square with the teachings of traditional Christianity, although not without precedent, as seen by the founding of Mormonism by Joseph Smith in the early 19th century. The comparison with Mormonism is an apt one, as most mainstream Christian churches consider the two as offshoots of Christianity. Both groups have also been tarred as cults by their detractors.

Alongside claims about Manalo’s position as God’s final messenger, the INC is based on the claims in Revelations 7:2 which describe the re-establishment of the Church in the Far East, with an angel approaching “having the seal of the living God.” The leadership of the Iglesia Ni Cristo maintains that Felix (and now the INC) possess this seal, thus distinguishing them as the chosen saved. Consequently, the INC prevents its members from individual interpretation of the Bible, with an INC hymn proclaiming: “And the teachings of God; To the Messenger only were given; He is the only one who has the right to teach the truth.” Manalo claimed, and the INC’s successive executive ministers continue to claim, ownership of the Seventh Seal and its attendant authority as their prerogative.
INC under Eduardo Manalo experiences rapid growth
By the time of Felix Manalo’s death in 1963, the INC had 1,250 local chapels and thirty-five cathedrals across the Philippines. The latest census figures from 2010 show over 2.5 million INC worshippers in the Philippines, equivalent to 2.45 percent of the country's population, and the INC’s central Temple in Quezon City is the largest place of worship in the Philippines, with a seating capacity of some 7,000. Manalo was succeeded by his son Erano Manalo, who lead the INC until his death in 2009. He in turn has been succeeded by his son, Eduardo Manalo (hereafter Manalo), who has overseen the church’s rapid international expansion. The INC has opened 1,155 new chapels in the last six years alone, 64 of which are outside the Philippines.
The proliferation of INC churches in the Philippines during Manalo’s time has been mirrored by a growing number for publicity stunts, including a fondness for breaking world records, such as the largest human sentence; largest charity walk in a single venue; and most number of blood pressure readings in eight hours. Critics of these public displays say they distract from the ostensible charity work being undertaken, being more about impressing the faithful and non-members alike. Specifically, critics maintain that the INC’s grandiose charitable acts contain an ulterior motive, namely to instil a “debt of gratitude” among recipients, thus pressuring them to support or join the church in return.
While similar claims could also be made against other organizations, this penchant for grand gestures has already caused controversy in Africa. In March 2017, the INC was suspended with immediate effect in Zambia after eight persons were killed during a stampede for free food being distributed by the church. In addition, Zambia’s Minister for Religious and National Guidance, Rev. Godfridah Sumaili claimed the church failed to show that it had all the necessary legal documentation on conduct operations in the country.
Despite these misgiving both at home and abroad, in recent years the INC has been honoured with postage stamps commemorating the deaths of its two former executive ministers: 2014 was also declared the ‘Year of Iglesia Ni Cristo’ by the Philippine government in honour of the church’s 100th anniversary. Some Philippine banknotes from 2014 also display the church’s seal in commemoration of the centenary, and July 27th (the day Felix Manalo founded the INC) was designated as a special non-working holiday in 2009.
Speaking out against the INC a deadly gamble
Manalo spends his weeks travelling throughout the Philippines and around the world, opening new houses of worship, accompanied by a small army of security personnel and attendants, all of whom are shuttled around the globe in the INC’s private aircraft. The INC’s worldly riches are here on display, riches which the church has accumulated from the donations of its congregations across the world. The INC’s overseas congregations are a major source of income, and rumours have circulated for years that Iglesia Ni Cristo has been involved in money laundering, siphoning cash back to the organization’s main headquarters in Quezon.
Concerns about the extravagant lifestyles of the INC’s senior leadership have caused some INC members to speak out against church policies and corruption. The INC’s response to these dissenting voices has been draconian. After an anonymous source within the church starting leaking evidence of corruption among the senior leadership, church authorities initiated a crackdown, abducting ten INC workers and ministers suspected of being the leak and interrogating them. One of the individuals abducted was Lowell Menorca II, who (along with his family) has since sought refugee status in Canada. Menorca describes being being interrogated for hours about the leak, only to be handcuffed and dumped in a car. His kidnappers abandoned the vehicle in the countryside, threw something in the back seat and took off.
"I was able to get a glimpse of it, and when [his kidnappers] ran off, I immediately knew that it's a grenade," Menorca said. "When I saw it, [I thought], 'That's it.' That's the end of me. The only thing I could do was bow my head and pray for my wife and child. That's it. But then I realized when I was able to finish my prayer up to, 'Amen,' that's pretty long for a grenade."
The grenade failed to go off, and Menorca managed to escape and continues to be an outspoken critic: he has been sued by the INC a total of forty-five times for libel as a result. Described as “cult-like” by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board, the INC benefits from close ties to Philippine security forces, leaving critics with nowhere to turn. Writing on the issue, the Board noted that “there are various scenarios where [the claimant] could be assassinated, from staged police encounters, to death in custody, to contract murder in a country where hitmen are plentiful and cheap.”

Whereas Menorca managed to escape to Canada, others have not been so fortunate, with a spate of killings occurring in recent years. While no connection between the INC and the murder has been officially drawn, the victims were all critical of the church. “They are willing to kill for [the leader of the church], and they can take that kind of mentality, that kind of approach, the aggressive approach outside the Philippines” states Rolando Rizon, a former INC minister in the United States.
This purge of voices critical to the direction taken by the INC under Manalo was mirrored by a rift in the INC’s First Family, as Manalo clashed with his siblings and mother in 2015. That year a video surfaced on Youtube of Manalo’s mother and younger brother Angel calling on INC members to protect them, claiming that their lives were in danger: both were later excommunicated from the church by Manalo. Angel and nephew Victor Eraño Hemedez were later arrested in 2017 following the discovery of a weapons cache on church property tied to the two men.
The circumstances surrounding this find are suspicious at best, as it would have been next to impossible for the police to gain access to INC property without the tacit consent of the INC’s leadership. The Church also lodged libel cases against journalists investigating the incident, who questioned why a church had a private armoury in the first place.
Are Eduardo Manalo and the INC the kingmakers of Filipino politics?
Iglesia Ni Cristo’s unsavoury connections to criminal elements and extra-judicial killings demonstrates that the church operates above the law in the Philippines. For instance, government inquiries into church affairs in 2015 resulted in the INC mobilizing thousands of followers to occupy a busy highway in Manilla in protest, severely hampering business as usual in the capital. One refugee claimant in Canada maintains that the INC “cannot be touched by the Philippine government, judiciary or law enforcement or even by the president himself.”
To a certain degree, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is beholden to the INC, as the church endorsed him during the 2016 presidential election. By itself such an endorsement would not mean much, but given the fact that INC members engage in bloc-voting, securing the votes of millions of INC followers can clinch victory in a close fought election.
Consequently, it should come as no surprise that each of the five candidates running for president in 2016 individually visited Manalo to secure his endorsement. In 2016, Manalo also received a host of other prominent visitors, including the ambassadors of Israel, Australia, New Zealand and Russia all of whom had come to congratulate Manalo on the seventh anniversary of his rise to executive minister. Manalo also received Martin Slabber, the South African ambassador, who explicitly came to meet the man behind the church, having heard of the INC’s rapid expansion in South Africa.
“Can you imagine [that] a church leader who’s suspected of associating with smugglers, embezzlers, and extortionists is now entrusted with official political powers and diplomatic immunity?” — Lowell Menorca II, former INC member
Manalo’s clout in Filipino political circles was confirmed in early 2018 when he was appointed Special Envoy for Overseas Filipino Concerns by Duterte in a move seen as payback for the former’s support during the 2016 election. Such an appointment is unprecedented as former INC leaders have made conscious efforts to keep the church out of political matters. “Although there are times when government officials of an agency like the Dept. of Health seek the help and cooperation of the INC in some government projects only now has the INC Executive Minister been designated (which he immediately accepted) by the President as an official of the government,” explains Isaias Samson Jr. an exiled former INC-minister and former editor-in-chief of the INC’s flagship Pasugo magazine.
In response to critics, Labour Secretary Silvestre Bello III denied any wrongdoing, arguing that the INC’s international reach and large number of congregations is a huge boon for the government in its efforts to assist and protect overseas Filipino workers. Despite such statements, Samson and other critics of Manalo maintain that the move reeks of cronyism. By way of comparison, Samson muses on what the reaction of Catholics would be if the Prime Minister of Italy appointed the Pope as his official representative - “And do you think the Pope would accept?!” guffaws Samson.
“There is a long list of more qualified people in the whole archipelago who have the experience and the qualifications to handle the job, and stating that they chose Mr. Eduardo Manalo because of his ‘wide network’ abroad, without the appropriate merit for experience and qualification is a poor justification and will eventually open a can of worms. Can you imagine [that] a church leader who’s suspected of associating with smugglers, embezzlers, and extortionists is now entrusted with official political powers and diplomatic immunity?” laments Menorca, who also wonders whether Manalo will work to help overseas Filipinos critical (or former members) of Igelsia Ni Cristo.
Iglesia Ni Cristo desire to control everything threatens African societies
The more influence the INC gains in the political realm, the more it is increasingly becoming a parallel source of power within the Philippines. Already exempt from any extensive oversight and with close ties to security services, the INC is free to acquire interests in a range of areas. Take the case of the media: not content with the fact that 63 radio stations and almost three hundred TV channels broadcast INC programming, the church has sought to create its own media infrastructure. In August 2018, the Philippine legislature voted unanimously to extend the INC’s ability to own, operate and construct all relevant media infrastructure and systems by another twenty-five years.
With control over both content and distribution, the INC has more power than ever to control its media narrative. This information control is coupled with the church’s extensive real estate holdings and affiliated organizations which provide services to its followers. Controlling the media its adherents consume, and the services which they use, the INC is seeking total control over its followers. The culimination of such efforts can be seen in the INC’s self-contained communes.
One of the INC’s newest communes is in Free State, South Africa, where the church has purchased 5,000 hectares for the creation of an eco-farm. Touted as a means to aid the local poor by creating jobs and boosting food production, the commune near Ladybrand primarily provides food, employment, education and even housing for INC members.
The INC is also spending millions of Rand to build a church on a 508 hectare plot in Ladybrand surrounded by an electric fence. The church also has properties in nearby Ficksburg and Thaba Nchu, as well as across the border in Maseru, Lesotho: it is estimated that Iglesia Ni Cristo’s global eco-farm holdings amount to some 66,206 hectares.
The INC’s drive to control all facets of its adherents’ lives sees it forbid absence from services without good reason, the drinking of alcohol and romantic relationships (including marriages) with non-members. Iglesia Ni Cristo also adheres to conservative notions regarding dress and relations between the sexes. One local Ladybrand resident experienced this first hand after attending an INC service. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the woman in question recounts that “I was filled with outrage when the women were separated. We did not have access to the rest of the congregation, and there was a high empty chair next to every female congregation member. We could only see [the pastor] preach on an electronic screen.”
The creation of various religious communes in the Philippines and around world centralize all the daily needs of followers in one spot, thus minimizing the need for the INC faithful to interact with the wider world. Writing under the pseudonym Malaya dela Cruz in the the Rappler, one young INC member accuses the church of caring more about itself than in helping people in general.
“We’re prohibited to participate in any form of social mobilization or unions because it’s against the unity of the church, even if such actions address concerns that directly affect the welfare of members [...] If the church could use its clout to truly help the nation by addressing long term needs and root causes of perennial social issues – such as lobbying and supporting genuine agrarian reform, a fair wage and other issues that affect the marginalized majority, where many of its own members come from, we shall contribute to societal change.”
This insular attitude poses a serious threat to civil societies across Africa, many of whom are already undermined by their respective governments. The growth of a church that preaches withdrawal and passivity will only undermine local efforts to foster civic engagement and hold the powers that be to account.
The Bottom Line
What began as the idea of one Filipino man over a century ago has since mushroomed into a global megachurch, spanning over a hundred countries and boasting millions of devout supporters. The INC’s departure from traditional Christianity and the exaltation of its founder, Felix Manalo, has done little to slow its growth in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic nation. Iglesia Ni Cristo has become a political and religious force to be reckoned with, in some instances acting as a king-maker in Filipino politics due to the bloc-voting of its adherents.
This growing political clout has been especially noticeable since Eduardo Manalo, grandson of the INC’s founder - became the sect’s Executive Minister back in 2009. Manalo’s tenure has seen a spate of scandals, as claims about church corruption and criminality have circulated, only to provoke an iron-fisted response from the INC. Neither ordinary followers nor members of the Manalo family have been spared by successive purges, interrogation, and even murder.
Already established in the West, the INC is now directing its focus on Africa, representing the latest wave of foreign missionaries to interact with the continent. As more INC congregations are founded across the region, there is increasing evidence that the church has imported its secretive and domineering attitudes to Africa as well. The growth of isolationist agricultural communes in South Africa and beyond represent a real threat, not only to social cohesion, but also to the efforts of local populations to organize for change. Behind the veneer of charity fun runs and potlucks, the INC harbours a sinister side that has sent a number of critics into exile - or the grave.

Rappler: INC and the mentality of exclusivity
A young member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo questions the teachings she has grown up with
by Malaya dela Cruz* [Rappler]
Published 12:00 PM, August 14, 2014
I’ve been an Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) member since I was born and my father is a minister. My siblings and I were raised to behold as absolute truth all doctrines without question. As kids, we’re brazen to tell our friends “Mag-Iglesia ka na kundi mapupunta ka sa dagat-dagatang apoy.” (Convert to Iglesia; otherwise, you'll end up in hell)
We’re flying with wings of righteousness holding the light to guide those lost in the darkness, we call sanlibutan; completely convinced that we’re indeed the chosen ones come judgment day. All we have to do is follow like sheep and salvation is certain. This is my myopic reality.
Into the darkness
Coming of age, I learned our creationist view is indubitably wrong given the insurmountable evidences against it, yet I find this mistake tolerable; assuming perhaps a scientifically-informed interpretation of the bible isn’t necessary for salvation. I was indifferent about this just as I am in overriding any of my rights for the sake of unity; trusting that it’s always for the good of the church.
What became unbearable is having my consciousness raised about the multi-dimensional causes of poverty. I cannot unlearn what I know now - that the terrible social realities we dismiss right before our eyes as normal is caused by injustice from existing power structures in society.
It was alarming for I was undeniably guilty of being part of a church responsible for reinforcing structures that sustain poverty through our social attitude and practice of ‘unity.’
We are INC first before we are Filipinos
It is our faith, albeit fatalistic, that the world will inevitably perish and no developmental agenda by man could prevent it; we are only travelers here for our true residence is the kingdom of heaven. Hence, we resign concern about matters outside our kingdom unless it might undermine doctrines or the church administration.
We show power in numbers through bloc-voting and secure key positions in the government in order to protect the interests of the church, never mind whether it’s a corrupt official as long as the church is secured. This is why INC was indifferent during the People Power I despite all the atrocious harm done towards the Filipino people - all because we allied with former president Ferdinand Marcos, the dictator.
Culture of apathy
Since our primary concern is the good of the church and not of the people in general, an apathetic attitude towards social issues is fostered among members.
We’re prohibited to participate in any form of social mobilization or unions because it’s against the unity of the church, even if such actions addresses concerns that directly affect the welfare of members.
Greedy corporations who operate with inhumane policies are fortunate as INC members are willing allies to preserve an unfair system. We abstain claiming accountability from power-holders in the name of ‘peace.’ - a peace that is oblivious of its implications.
Yes, we’re an obedient flock of docile sheep but we’re also subtle criminals and dignified perpetrators of injustices against our fellowmen. With brilliant pride we take the side of the oppressors.
Our brand of humanitarianism
The provision of generous aid to millions of non-members through medical missions, relief distributions and housing projects are token gestures, for “conversion” is our utmost motivation by exploiting the sense of utang na loob (debt of gratitude).
INC’s brand of humanitarianism does not involve championing the interest and welfare of the poor by addressing root causes of social issues. Our humanitarian cause is the 'noblest' of all: to save your soul from damnation by converting you to the one true Church of Christ.
Masters of mobilization
We’re taught that hardships and misfortunes in life are either caused by sin or are trials we must endure. However, evidence suggests that societal structures and how its citizens participate in shaping it in the course of history is the concrete reason for the everyday struggles of today. Poverty is avoidable, development is a choice.
The public witnessed INC’s power to amass more than a million people in its administrations’ behest. If the church could use its clout to truly help the nation by addressing long term needs and root causes of perennial social issues – such as lobbying and supporting genuine agrarian reform, a fair wage and other issues that affect the marginalized majority, where many of its own members come from, we shall contribute to societal change.
Aren't we humans first?
My conscience is disturbed when I saw my fellow brethren exalte upon news of famine, war, destruction and calamities where thousands of people lay dead. Some even said, “Makasalanan kasi ang sanlibutan, matuwa tayo dahil nalalapit ang kaligtasan natin.” (The people are sinful. We should be happy because our salvation is near.) They seem to forget we’re humans first before we even subscribe to any religion.
'Saving your soul' as a single mission is quite selfish in the face of human suffering. I understand it stems from fear and existential uncertainties, but It’s wrong to choose a convenient personal escape and say “kung gusto niyo rin maligtas, umanib na kayo” (if you want to be saved, join us) instead of engaging in collective action driven by empathy and compassion.
We glory over the Philippine Arena, Guinness records, and the thousands of congregations we’ve built like the elite ruler gloating over his empire.
There is harm in a mentality of exclusivity when we operate in the context of a larger society. Imagining a fragmented reality wherein we are only travelers goes against the truth that we have a responsibility to contribute and cooperate in facilitating change in the world. We can do this by renouncing apathy and using our power to mobilize for the good of people. - Rappler.com

We Labored for Souls in Africa Bringing Peace in the Name of Christ!
While our Catholic missionaries survived all hardships bringing the Good News to every people on earth including the continent of Africa, WOLVES come and snatch souls to Satan. Missionaries of Felix Y. Manalo's church the Iglesia Ni Cristo® - 1914 should go to places and countries NOT YET "CHRISTIANIZED" and bring their fake version of Christianity there and not to places we Catholics already labored. We Catholics tirelessly toiled to bring souls to Christ while INC™ just come and harvest what they never labored ~ wolves in sheep' clothing indeed!

Participants of the Inter-Diocesan Conference on Cross-border Peace and Eevangelisation, Lodwar in Kenya |
Bishops and participants attending the 6th Annual Inter-Diocesan Conference on Cross-Border Peace and Evangelization held at St. Teresa Pastoral Centre, Turkana, Kenya have resolved to begin a peaceful disarmament process of small arms and light weapons mostly used by pastoralists around Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and South Sudan borders.
Rose Achiego – Nairobi, Kenya
In a press statement issued to the media this week, Kenya’s Bishop of Maralal Diocese, Virgilio Pante, who is also the Chairperson for the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB)-Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Seafarers announced that that the process of peaceful disarmament would soon begin. The initiative would be an effort to wean-off pastoralist communities of their small arms that have caused so much havoc and suffering in the border areas of Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Church committed to disarmament
“We will no longer remain silent. We will no longer remain indecisive, and we will no longer be fearful. We are committed to highlighting the suffering caused by small arms in the daily lives of our people,” said Bishop Pante. He was flanked by the Bishop of Lodwar, Dominic Kimeng’ich, who is the Vice Chairperson of the KCCB-Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Seafarers.
According to the Bishops, peaceful disarmament can only be done in an environment of trust, collaboration and commitment for the respect and protection of human life.
Governments need to provide alternative livelihoods
While acknowledging the efforts of the governments of Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia in their continuous peacebuilding initiatives both at the national level and across the borders, the Bishops of Maralal and Lodwar called on governments in the region to do more in sensitising pastoral communities on the need to embrace peaceful co-existence and peaceful disarmament.
“The governments should ultimately provide alternative or complementary livelihoods for the citizens living in the conflict-affected areas,” Bishop Pante and Kimengi’ch said
Religious leaders and civil society should address the root causes
The Bishops further other invited religious leaders and members of Civil Society Organisations in the region to identify and address the root causes of what has been ailing communities of the border areas over the years.
They also called upon grassroots communities to collectively reject the attraction of armed violence as a solution to their problems.
“We encourage you to work with all stakeholders to reaffirm the value of human life and work together to counter the pervasive culture of violence. It will be for the benefit of all of us to commit to peaceful disarmament,” the prelates said.
Small arms in the hands of communities have caused destruction
As reported by Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA) the region hosts 8 million out of an estimated 36 million small arms and light weapons. The weapons are in the hands of civilians.
As a result of the endemic conflicts, the border regions host the highest number of refugees and displaced persons on the African continent.
The proliferation of small arms heighten insecurity
According to the statement, demand for Small Arms and Light Weapons is driven by the ineffective provision of security by governments, commercialisation and politicisation of livestock raiding, marginalisation by governments, a need for the disarmed to rearm; and, cultural practices.
The proliferation of these small arms has caused thousands of deaths and injuries, displacement and forced migration of people, hampered development, loss of hundreds of livestock among pastoralist communities, heightened insecurity, loss of productivity, reduced economic output and insurgencies.

AsiaNews: Nepalese Dalits abandon Hindu faith en masse. They believe in Jesus who will save them
Our Catholic missionaries work so hard in bringing the Good News to far-flung areas like Nepal, who hardly had heard about Jesus Christ and His one and only Church ~ the Catholic Church. And once we labored for souls, WOLVES in SHEEP'S CLOTHING enter and snatch them away from the fold like the Jehovah's Witnesses (Founded by Charles Taze Russel in 1870), the Iglesia Ni Cristo® (founded by Felix Manalo in 1914), The Seventh-Day Adventists or Sabadistas (Founded by Ellen Gaud White et.al. in 1863) and many other different and opposing Protestant sects sowing division and confusion among them by introducing them to many different corrupted copies of the bible to suit their evil agenda etc. Let's pray that this young Nepalese Church will not succumb to temptation and remain faithful to Jesus, the Church and the Magisterium. To the Triune God be the Glory forever! -CD2000

In Surkhet district tens of thousands humiliated for caste reasons ask to be baptized. The decision was taken during a secret meeting with 200 representatives. Hindu prohibition makes their lives impossible. The fact is symptomatic of a more general phenomenon. In Nepal there is a law against discrimination, but police do not intervene and complaints are never taken into account.
Kathmandu (AsiaNews) - The Dalits have decided to organize a secret meeting to pray for Jesus to save them. Conversions and renunciations of the Hindu faith are occurring in the Surkhet district of western Nepal. The Dalits are marginalized because of their caste belonging. And they are tired of suffering serious discrimination and threats.
Sanu Nepali, 21, was beaten by some senior caste members on Wednesday, July 5. They accused him of bathing in public drinking water, polluting it physically and above all "spiritually." He ended up in the hospital.
Two months ago, a nine-year-old Dalit boy, Bhim Bahadur, was brutally beaten with perhaps only because he dared to enter the kitchen of a family of a higher caste of his, in the village of Barahatal, in the same district.
It is estimated that about 50,000 Dalits in Surkhet District, who were victims of serious discrimination, have decided to leave the Hindu faith and embrace the message of Christianity. The decision was taken in the meeting with a large number of representatives.
Lal Babu BK, one of the participants said, "We were more than 200. We have come together to convert to Christianity to save ourselves. We have all practiced Hindu faith for generations since it was mandatory, but today the country is secularized and Hindu faith can not save us. Those who torment and who humiliate us are Hindus like us. By being named untouchables we are judged from the bottom down. We can not even touch lower caste people, can not enter their homes, we can not touch public drinking water and can not have access to public places. So what is this belief? Are we certain in this faith? We concluded 'no' and decided to convert to Christianity. ""We are in danger everywhere," he added, "and we are discriminated at any time, so we ask for the grace of Jesus because we have seen that there is no discrimination in Christianity. We believe that Jesus can protect us.""The decision is made even if we have not yet contacted the Christian priest who can baptize us," concluded Lal Babu BK, "we will do it and we hope the priest will welcome us."
Sudip Pathak, a human rights activist, commented: "People are free to take all necessary protection measures when they are threatened and the state can not protect them."
Binod Pahadi, a Dalit and former parliamentary activist, said: "It is not only the question of the district of Surkhet, but it is symptomatic of the situation in the whole country. There is a law against discrimination and for equality, but in practice there is a strong oppression of low caste people. "
Jayasara, mother of Bhim Bahadur BK, said: "We made this decision from the moment we had no alternatives to save us."
A few months ago, a similar case had occurred in the capital of Kathmandu. Kamala Nepali, a Dalit woman was violently beaten for having touched the water taps in Chandeshwori in Tokha Municipality in Kathmandu. Shanta KC, the woman who beat her has never been punished.
There are legal provisions against such discrimination, but when victims present their complaints, they are not heard.
Police Officer Bhattarai, involved in this case said, "Victims can not produce evidence and we can not punish anyone in the absence of evidence."
However, there are thousands of people who are victims of such aberrations in Nepal.

INQ.NET: Catholic Church: World’s biggest charitable organization

Catholic nuns with poor children. |
Some consider the Catholic Church as a spiritual institution founded for a spiritual purpose – and only that. And I recall Josef Stalin’s quip to French Prime Minister Pierre Laval in 1935: “The Pope! How many divisions has he got?” (as quoted in Winston Churchill, The Second World War, 1948), which was purposeful sarcasm to point out how on earth a spiritual institution could do anything to help thwart the escalating military threat of Nazism.
But the Catholic Church is more than a spiritual institution. Apparently using “the strategy of non-coercive power” (Deus Vult: The Geopolitics of the Catholic Church, 2010), the Church runs 5,500 hospitals, 18,000 clinics, 16,000 homes for the elderly and those with special needs, with 65 percent of them located in underdeveloped and developing countries.
Consider Caritas, the confederation of Catholic aid agencies that spent billions of dollars for poor humanity. Then sum up all the small-scale charitable projects of more than 200,000 Catholic parishes around the world and those of individual religious orders such as the Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans, Opus Dei, Vincentians, and others.
Christians are only following the footsteps of Christ. The historical Jesus had a social mission, in addition to His mission of evangelization. The total liberation of the human person was foremost in the life and death of Him crucified, who was indeed never indifferent to the sufferings of others.
Jesus’ concern was not limited to the forgiveness of sins. He cured the sick, many of them, cleansing lepers, making cripples walk and the blind see. He fed the hungry, thousands of them. and so were His Apostles and the early Christians.
In obedience to her historical Founder, the Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and forgives sins (through her ordained Churchmen), as prophet preaches the Gospel without letup and, with the hierarchy and the laity, gets involve with the poor and the marginalized.
Catholic Church: Largest provider of health care services
The review of the history of medical care begins not with the Monastic Rule of Saint Benedict (AD 480–550) that articulates the tenet: “The care of the sick is to be placed above and before every other duty, as if Christ were being directly served.”

From the Gospel to the early Christian communities to the Benedictine Rule, Christ was the inspiration. The Catholic Church’s institutional apostolate for the sick gave rise to the gradual development of a more systematic nursing and medical care of today.
To fast forward a bit, during the Middle Ages (500 AD to 1500 AD), monasteries, bishops’ houses, and convents became the key medical centers of Europe. The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, founded in 1696, are dedicated to nursing, visiting the poor, and taking care of the old and infirm, orphans, and the mentally ill. Today, with operations worldwide, they have about 121 Sisters in the Philippines working in 13 hospitals.
Nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, who cared for the British troops during the Crimean War (1853-1856), once said: “What training is there to compare with that of a Catholic nun.”
Around 4,500 Missionary Sisters of Charity (founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa) care for hundreds of thousands of poor refugees, mentally ill, the aged and convalescent, sick and abandoned children, lepers, and people with AIDS – in addition to running schools to educate street children and managing soup kitchens around the world.
“The Church, adhering to the mandate of Jesus… during the course of her history, which by now has lasted two millennia, has always attended to the sick and the suffering,” reported the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers in 2013.
Immersed and yet transcendent, rooted on earth and yet yearning for heaven, the Church does not have all the technical solutions to the problems afflicting the world, Benedict XVI admitted in 2009, days after the G8 Summit in Italy, but she remains “an expert in humanity” who proclaims the Gospel of love and justice.
The Catholic Church aids humanity to be fully alive to give greater glory to God. As Saint Ireneaus nicely put it: “Gloria Dei vivens homo.”

Fire at Tallahassee’s Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More adds to the growing list of attacks on churches
John Burger | Jun 07, 2019 Aleteia.orgAre incidents of church vandalism on the rise?

“Today, there was a fire inside the Co-Cathedral church in Tallahassee,” Bishop William A. Wack Diocese of the Pensacola-Tallahassee Diocese said in a statement Thursday. “The cathedra [bishop’s chair] and presiders’ chairs were set on fire and are destroyed. The walls of the sanctuary are charred, and there is smoke damage. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and it went out before igniting the whole building. An investigation is underway.”
“Having seen churches burn in the news, seeing this before, I didn’t ever think that this would happen to our church here,” Fr. John Cayer, the cathedral’s rector, told WCTV. “We have no idea who has done this. This is an obvious case of arson.”
A common reaction on the part of parishioners to incidents of vandalism against churches is “Why would anyone do this?”
But there might be another reason to ask why: Why does it seem like vandalism against churches is on the rise?
Recent incidents include:
- A statue of Jesus was broken apart and left in pieces in front of St. Mark’s in Boston on Sunday. Earlier in the year there was a rash of graffiti attacks at various Boston churches.
- A statue of the Virgin Mary was found defaced at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Selden, New York, at the end of May. There was damage to the nose, chin and one of the cheeks.
- Pro-abortion graffiti was spray-painted onto Notre Dame de Lourdes church in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, last month.
- All Saints Catholic Church in Babcock, Wisconsin, was defaced with graffiti reflecting religious hatred and pornography May 14.
- Someone spilled paint, wrote graffiti and broke windows at All Saints Catholic Church in New Richland, Minnesota, the night of May 11-12. They also spilled wine, attempted to remove a microphone from the altar and tried to break into a lock box in a back room.
- St. Matthew Catholic Church in El Paso was vandalized May 7, Earlier in the month, a window at St. Patrick Cathedral was broken, and a bottle with an unknown liquid was found near the damaged window.
- A statue of St. Bernadette was damaged at St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek, Michigan, May 7.
According to the FBI, the number of incidents of anti-Catholic “hate crimes” has been fairly steady over the past few years. From 70 incidents in 2013, it has dipped to 53 in 2015, but has risen to 62 in 2016 and 73 in 2017, the latest year for which statistics are available.
In the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, one of the 10 largest Latin Catholic dioceses in the U.S., instances of vandalism have been low for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018. Only three reports of theft, burglary, and vandalism have been filed with the archdiocese’s Insurance Services Office.
“One additional instance of vandalism that the office is aware of was not reported to Insurance Services because the parish community took care of cleaning and repairs on a volunteer basis,” Alaina N. Longo, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said on Thursday.

Totoong Diyos at Totoong Tao!

PASUGO Hulyo 1955, nasa panakip:

SI HESUS AY HINDI NILALANG (not created) NG DIYOS AMA AYON SA BIBLIA
Ang itinuturo ng Biblia ay si CRISTO AY NAGKATAWANG-TAO at wala ang salitang "TAO LAMANG". Ang "lamang" (only) na pilit ikinakabit sa pagiging tao ni Cristo ay pantakip lamang at pilit na pinalalabas na si Cristo ay "HINDI DIYOS kailanman"at Siya sa pasimula pa ay tao at sa Kanyang pagbabalik tao pa rin siya tulad ng nasusulat sa kanilang opisyal na magasing Pasugo, Enero, 1964, p. 13 (Sinulat ni Emiliano Agustin);

(The Jesus was created by God the Father).
[6:23]"And then about Jesus, when I read chapter 3 verses 45 to 55 verses, there are ten (10) points which the Qur'an makes about Jesus: The first thing the Qur'an says, kalimat al'ilh (كلمة الاله), the Arabic word which means "WORD OF GOD". And the second thing, rawh allah (روح الله) which means SPIRIT OF GOD. And the third Eisaa Almasih (يسوع المسيح) which means JESUS CHRIST. So Qur'an gives the NAME OF JESUS: WORD OF GOD, SPIRIT OF GOD, JESUS CHRIST.
[7:05] "So I think that He (Jesus) can GIVE LIFE. He gave life to mud, clay."[7:16] "Continuously the Qur'an says that Jesus gave life to dead people; Jesus went to heaven; HE IS STILL ALIVE; and HE WILL COME AGAIN. When I saw all these things in Qur'an my thinking what the Qur'an says about Muhammad."[7:30] "You know according to the Qur'an, the Prophet Muhammad is NOT the Word of God; NOT the Spirit of God; never spoke when he was two (2) years old; never created any bird with mud; never cured any sick people; never raised any dead people; he himself died, and according to Islam he is NOT ALIVE, and he will not come back."
[7:50]"I don't call Jesus God, you know. My idea was He's a Prophet but He is a prophet greater than Muhammad. So one day I went to my teacher, the one who taught me ten (10) years in Arabic College, and I asked him, "Teacher, how did God create the universe?" Then he said, "God created the universe through the Word. THROUGH THE WORD." Then my question:"WORD CREATOR OR CREATION?"Must clear it. My question: Whether the WORD OF GOD is CREATOR or CREATION? Qur'an says JESUS IS WORD OF GOD. If my teacher says that the Word of God is Creator, which means JESUS IS CREATOR. Then the Muslims must be Christians."
[8:31] "Suppose he if he says the Word is creation, he will be trapped. You know why? He said everything was created THROUGH THE WORD. Suppose he said the Word is creation, then how did God created the Word?"
"Ngayon ay niluluwalhati na ang Anak ng Tao, sa kanya naman ay niluluwalhati ang Diyos. Kung ang Diyos ay niluwalhati na sa kanya, siya ay luluwalhatiin naman ng Diyos sa kanyang sarili at luluwalhatiin siya kapagdaka." (Ang Diyos ay luluwalhati kay Cristo sa Kanyang kalagayan bilang Tao, sapagkat sa Kanyang kalagayan, Siya ay Diyos sa kalikasang taglay niya bago pa lalangin ang sanlibutan).Juan 17:5;
"Ngayon, Ama, luwalhatiin mo ako sa harap mo ng KALUWALHATIANG TINAGLAY KONG KASAMA MO BAGO PA LALANGIN ANG SANLIBUTAN." (Punto!

30,000 Houses for Typhoon Yolanda Victims
Source: CBCP News
By Roy Lagarde
November 16, 2018
Manila, Philippines
Official figures show that the Catholic Church built more than 30,000 homes in different provinces devastated by the Philippines’ deadliest typhoon on record.
The figures were announced Friday during Caritas Philippines’ commemoration of the 5th anniversary of typhoon Yolanda in Palo, Leyte.
Started in 2014, the church’s 3-year rehabilitation program focused on shelter, livelihood, water, sanitation and health, community organizing, community-managed risk reduction, ecosystems recovery and institutional capacity building.
Fr. Edwin Gariguez, Caritas Philippines’ Executive Secretary, said that Caritas Internationalis was instrumental in ensuring not only funds but also experts in the fields of recovery and rehabilitation.
“That is why we were able to accomplish so many things,” Gariguez said.
“In 2013, we at Caritas Philippines didn’t even thought that we’ll be capable of implementing what would be the Church’s most massive, largest-funded and most comprehensive humanitarian response,” he quipped.
The number of houses built does not include yet the shelter projects of various religious congregations and other church-based groups.
The priest said each of the Caritas organization doing bilateral programs in the dioceses ensured collaboration, thus maximizing all available resources, reaching more than 1.4 million Filipinos.
He was referring to Caritas Internationalis member organizations namely, Catholic Relief Service, Caritas Switzerland, Caritas Italiana, Caritas Belgium, Caritas Germany, Development and Peace (D&P), Caritas Austria, and Cordaid.
He added that being able to able to build thousands of houses speak of the dedication and commitment of the Church “to better the lives and restore the dignity” of typhoon victims.
“We are very proud of this accomplishment, yet humbled by the experience,” Gariguez stressed.
The houses were constructed in the provinces of Leyte, Samar, Easter Samar, Palawan, Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Antique and other areas devastated by super typhoon Yolanda.
The Church’s over-all Caritas response amounted to more than P3.2 billion.

Patheos: Did Catholics Corrupt the Church That Jesus Founded?

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with Rod Bennett, author of The Apostasy That Wasn’t.
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with Rod Bennett, author of The Apostasy That Wasn’t.
Every Christian church that isn’t Catholic, said Rod in our hour-plus interview, has an apostasy theory.
Every Christian church that isn’t Catholic has to have picked a time, in history, when the Church that Jesus founded went off the rails.
Got lost.
Was hopelessly corrupt.
Strayed from the simple faith that Christ established and had to be inevitably rescued somewhere later down the line.
This is the working hypothesis of all Christians that aren’t Catholic, says Rod. The Church that Jesus clearly founded in the Bible with Peter and the apostles in charge, somehow became so terribly unhinged from Christ’s original plan.
Here’s how it often goes.
Jesus, as pictured in the New Testament, appointed twelve apostles to help establish his Church. After his death, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven, Christ trusted these apostles—11 plus the newly-appointed Matthias—to plant churches, to establish communities, and to spread the message of Christianity across the world.
As the story goes, the apostles started out well. The Church was growing but mostly in secret; mostly sequestered in upper rooms or hidden below the ground. The Church was spreading incognito.
But, at some point in history, the Church began to become more popular. It began to Romanize as the Roman Empire adopted it as its official religion. Politics, war, economics began to mingle with pious religion which quickly began to look more and more like the condemnable “religion” of Pharisees than the simple “faith” of the apostles.
At this point, or sometimes later, an apostasy took place.
That is, the Church which Jesus established was so far off the rails that the Holy Spirit called it quits and left the building.
(No tips for the waitresses either.)
But, says Rod, it simply ain’t so.
For one thing, the myth of the simple faith of the Early Church is, just that, a myth. From the very beginning, the earliest Christians began to define substantial doctrine, mark out holy places with shrines and cathedrals, and were very much active and involved in public life—even while Christianity wasn’t officially recognized by the Roman authorities.
While scores of the first Christians were martyred and persecuted for their faith, the church continued by appointing successors to the apostles and successors to their successors and so on and so forth. The Church, far from being a disorganized band of Christians cowering in private homes, was a hierarchically structured, doctrined and disciplined, visible body of believers with a clear chain of authority, from the very beginning.
If the Church somehow jettisoned the simple faith of the apostles it did so immediately after beginning.
But what about later?
Most non-Catholic Christians will point to Constantine and the AD 300-400’s as the time when the Early Church most definitely lost its way. As Christianity became “legal” it also began to mix with politics; it became a secular, paganized religion. And, again, that simple faith of the apostles was lost.
It wouldn’t be until the Reformation, 1,200 years later, that it was finally restored.
Rod says that this, too, is bunk.
If you read the Early Church Fathers the disciples of Jesus writing directly after the time of the apostles, you will see that the teaching of the Church is the same before, during, and after the so-called reign of the Christian Constantine.
In other words, the teaching and practice of the Church did not change even after it’s “legalization.”
The Early Church Fathers, Christians in places of authority, some of whom were direct disciples of the apostles appointed by Jesus, write clearly of an early Christian church which had an authority structure, clear doctrine, and beliefs that remain the same even after Constantine and the Roman Empire get involved.
While the Christian Church may have gotten cozy with the authorities, and while some popes are evil, the fundamental teaching of the Church—the one founded by Christ which continued to march on—was not altered.
There was no apostasy here.
But, what about later?
The challenge of it all, says Rod, is that every non-Catholic Christian must hold to some kind of apostasy theory. And every theory is different.
If you don’t accept that the Catholic Church, with its historical succession of bishops traced back to the apostles themselves, is still the Church that Christ founded then you have to develop some kind of theory of what happened.
What happened to that Church?
And whether or not you know it, you’ve got an apostasy theory.
Whether or not you know it, if you aren’t Catholic you are holding to a position that the Church founded by Christ was somehow lost in the mists of time and history. And, somehow, it was found again. Whether it was Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, or some other priest of prophet, if you believe that you’re in Christ’s Christian Church, you had to have found it again… after it was lost.
And how did that happen?
The ancient Church was Catholic. This is, from a historical perspective, impossible to dispute. With its succession of bishops, with its teaching on the Eucharist, baptism, and the sacraments. With the pope as its head, traceable through the veil of history up to today, the Church founded by Christ is what we today call the Catholic Church.
Maybe, you’d say, what is today’s Catholic church somehow went off the rails. Maybe it was the Church founded by Christ but it stumbled. When and where is a matter of, you’d say… opinion? Somehow that doesn’t seem good enough.
But if you aren’t Catholic, says Rod Bennett, you need to know why. You need a better answer.
When do you think the Church went wrong? Where? And when was it brought back under the harness of the Holy Spirit once again? These are fundamental questions, which demand satisfying answers.
Or, maybe, there wasn’t an apostasy after all. Maybe when Jesus said that the gates of Hades would not overcome His Church, he meant it. Maybe the Catholic Church that marches on today—that holds to the same ancient beliefs, practices, and doctrines of the very first Christians—is still the Church that Jesus made.
I think so.

“Even secular history shows a direct time link between the Catholic Church and the Apostles, leading to the conclusion that the true Church of Christ is the Catholic Church.”
PASUGO MARCH-APRIL 1992, p. 22
"The Church of Christ during the time of the Apostles became the Catholic Church of the bishops in the second century..."
"The Roman Catholic Church traces its history to Jesus Christ and the Apostles. Over the course of centuries it developed a highly sophisticated theology and an elaborate organizational structure headed by the papacy, the oldest continuing absolute monarchy in the world."
"The Catholic Church is the oldest institution in the western world. It can trace its history back almost 2000 years."
"...the history of the Roman Catholic Church is integral to the history of Christianity as a whole. It is also, according to church historian, Mark A. Noll, the "world's oldest continuously functioning international institution." This article covers a period of just under two thousand years."
Kaya't DITO LAMANG TAYO SA TOTOO. Ayon sa KASAYSAYAN, ENCYCLOPEDIA at maging sa magasing PASUGO, "ANG IGLESIA KATOLIKA" nga naman MISMO ang "TUNAY NA IGLESIANG TATAG NI CRISTO!" Samakatuwid ITO ANG TUNAY AT NAG-IISANG IGLESIA NI CRISTO!
Kaya't DITO LAMANG TAYO SA TOTOO. Ayon sa KASAYSAYAN, ENCYCLOPEDIA at maging sa magasing PASUGO, "ANG IGLESIA KATOLIKA" nga naman MISMO ang "TUNAY NA IGLESIANG TATAG NI CRISTO!" Samakatuwid ITO ANG TUNAY AT NAG-IISANG IGLESIA NI CRISTO!

[According to tradition, the history of the Catholic Church begins with Jesus Christ and his teachings (c. 4 BC – c. AD 30) and the Catholic Church is a continuation of the early Christian community established by the Disciples of Jesus.] -Wikipedia
[So too Cyril of Jerusalem, in the fourth century, says that the Church is called Catholic not only 'because it is spread throughout the world', but also 'because it teaches completely and without defect all the doctrines which ought to come to the knowledge of men'.]
["This is the sole Church of Christ, which in the Creed we profess to be one, holy, catholic and apostolic."] -CCC 811

Iglesia Ni Cristo has thousands of followers in Canada, but in the Philippines, some devotees have been accused of kidnapping and murder. This is the story of a Canadian man who ran up against members of the church and ended up dead. (Source: CBS News)

“Yes, from all history, both secular and profane, as well as from the Bible considered as a human document, we learn that Jesus Christ established a Church, which from the earliest times has been called after Him the Christian Church or the Church of Christ.”
(Cassily, Francis B., S.J. Religion: Doctrine and Practice for use in Catholic High Schools. 12th and revised edition. Imprimi Potest: Charles H. Cloud, S.J. Provincial of the Chicago Province. Imprimatur: George Cardinal Mundelein, Archbishop of Chicago. Chicago: Loyola university Press, 1934, p. 442-443.)
[Christ "is the head of the body, the Church (Colossians 1:18)." He is the principle of creation and redemption. Raised to the Father's glory, "in everything he [is] preeminent, (Col. 1:18)" especially in the Church, through whom he extends his reign over all things.]
PASUGO Mayo 1952, p. 4
