PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES, plaintiff-appellee, vs. JUANITO ABELLA, DIOSDADO GRANADA, BENJAMIN DE GUZMAN, and EDGARDO VALENCIA,accused-appellants.

D E C I S I O N

DAVIDE, JR., C.J.:

It all started with an altercation during a basketball game. Three days later, or on 10 March 1992, the bodies of MARLON[1] Ronquillo; JOSEPH Ronquillo; ERWIN Lojero; ANDRES Lojero, Jr.; and FELIX Tamayo were fished out of the murky waters of the Pasig River, filthy, bloated, putrid, and decomposing. Postmortem examinations on the cadavers showed signs of foul play.

MARLON’s hands were tied at the back with a black electric cord. He had lacerated wounds, contusions, ligature marks and hematoma. He died from a gunshot wound on the head.[2]

ANDRES’ hands were bound at the back with a plastic flat rope with four loops. His genitals were cut off; and he had ligature marks, contusions, and hematoma. The cause of his death was “asphyxia by strangulation; hemorrhage, intracranial, traumatic.”[3]

JOSEPH’s hands were “hog-tied at the back using a basketball T-shirt.” He also had ligature marks, contusions, lacerated wounds and fracture. He died of “asphyxia by strangulation; hemorrhage, intracranial, traumatic with skull fracture.”[4]

ERWIN’s body showed abrasions and burns. There were cord impressions on his wrists and depressed fracture on his head and at the base of his skull. He died of “asphyxia by drowning with blunt head injury.”[5]

FELIX had abrasions on the left cheek and tie impressions on the wrists. The cause of his death was “asphyxia by drowning.”[6]

On 18 March 1992, five informations for murder were filed before the Regional Trial Court of Manila (hereafter the trial court) against Juanito ABELLA, Diosdado GRANADA, Benjamin DE GUZMAN, Edgardo VALENCIA, Renato Dante, and Virgilio de Guzman. The cases were raffled to Branch 52 presided over by the late Judge David Nitafan. Docketed as Criminal Cases Nos. 92-104529 to -33, the informations[7] identically read as follows:

That on or about March 8, 1992, in the City of Manila, Philippines, the said accused, conspiring and confederating together with others whose true names, real identities and present whereabouts are still unknown and helping one another, did then and there wilfully, unlawfully and feloniously, with intent to kill and with treachery and evident premeditation, attack, assault and use personal violence upon one Marlon Ronquillo y Alepda [(Criminal Case No. 92-104529), one Felix Tamayo y Pascual (Criminal Case No. 92-104530), one Andres Lojero, Jr. y Pascual (Criminal Case No. 92-104531), one Joseph Ronquillo y Alepda [(Criminal Case No. 92-104532), one Erwin Lojero y Pascual (Criminal Case No. 92-104533)] by then and there hitting his head with guns, kicking him, tying his hands, [neck and private organ (additional allegation in Criminal Case No. 92-104531)] and thereafter throwing his body into the river thereby inflicting upon the latter mortal wounds which were the direct and immediate cause of his death thereafter.

Contrary to law. [Enclosures supplied].

On 25 March 1992, the informations were amended to include three other accused, namely, Joselito Crespo, Bienvenido Dugay and Danilo Abarete.[8] Upon arraignment all the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. On 26 August 1992, Joselito Crespo, Renato Dante, Bienvenido Dugay, Danilo Abarete and Virgilio de Guzman were dropped from the information.[9]

The prosecution’s version of the events is as follows: In the morning of 7 March 1992, MARLON, JOSEPH, and an unidentified companion played three rounds of basketball against the team of JOEY de los Santos at the vicinity of Dalisay and Lakas Streets, Bacood, Sta. Mesa, Manila. The Ronquillos won the first two rounds; but the third round ended in a brawl, which the neighbors quickly pacified. JOEY later went back to Dalisay Street carrying two pillboxes. A certain Donald Ancheta saw him, took the pillboxes and turned them over to a policeman.[10]

On 8 March 1992, between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., JOEY and his brother GENER threw stones at the Ronquillos’ house, attracting the attention of neighbors, who forthwith ran after the brothers. JOEY and GENER were overtaken and mauled before they were released.[11]

Between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. of the same day, WILFREDO Lojero, a certain Daniel, and the victims were in front of the Ronquillos’ house in Lakas Street, trading stories while awaiting a certain Aling Flor.[12] JOSEPHINE del Rosario was then at the corner of Lakas Street on her way to a friend’s house when the victims called her and asked her about her mother, who was a barangay kagawad at Bacood. They told her that they were waiting for Aling Flor to report to her that JOEY and GENER threw stones at the Ronquillos’ house.[13] Later, EVELYN de la Cruz joined the group in the conversation.[14] The area was then illuminated by a streetlight at the corner of Damayan and Dalisay Streets about ten arms-length away.

Suddenly, a dirty white Ford Fiera without a plate number stopped in front of the group. There were about ten to thirteen people on board. Among them were JOEY and GENER, who looked out of the van and pointed at the victims. All the passengers except for JOEY and GENER alighted. Their faces were covered with black handkerchiefs, and they were armed. Someone shouted, “Pulis ito!” Another exclaimed, “Walang tatakbo!” FELIX ran but stopped when shots were fired; he was hit with a gun then dragged into the van. WILFREDO Lojero, however, managed to sneak into the Ronquillos’ house and was able to see everything. The other victims were boxed, kicked, and also hit with a gun and dragged into the van. Before the van sped away, one of the abductors warned JOSEPHINE, “Ikaw huwag kang maingay, wala kang nakita, wala kang narinig.”[15]

Meanwhile, at about 6:00 p.m. inside the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), Sta. Ana compound in Bacood, ELENA Bernardo was waiting for Pastor Cesar Almedina to seek his advice regarding her son-in-law’s problem. Pastor Almedina asked her to wait, and she did so. She waited until 10:00 p.m. Suddenly the guard switched off the lights inside the compound. With only the MERALCO light illuminating the compound from outside, she saw a dirty white Ford Fiera loaded with passengers enter and park in front of the pastoral house near the path leading to the basement. JOEY, GENER, all the accused and the victims were inside the van. Four of the victims were made to alight from the van, while the fifth one lay on the floor of the vehicle as though dead. The victims were brought to the basement, which was at the back of the chapel and beneath the choir office. ELENA followed. Inside the basement the victims were continually mauled, whipped with a gun, and beaten with steel tubes, lead pipes and other blunt instruments. One of the victims was tied with wire. Filemon Garcia arrived with a blowtorch and also entered the basement. ELENA heard the victims beg for mercy. Unable to endure the sight she sat in front of the chapel and stayed for 30 minutes. Pastor Almedina arrived and told her that they would talk about her problem at another time. Afterwards the victims were herded back to the Fiera. They seemed almost dead.[16]

On 10 March 1992, at 8:45 a.m., the lifeless body of FELIX was found floating on the Pasig River near Beata-Tawiran in Pandacan. At 12:25 p.m., ERWIN’s body was retrieved from the same river at the back of the Sta. Ana market. At about the same time, the decomposing bodies of ANDRES, MARLON and JOSEPH were also fished out of the Pasig River near Lambingan Bridge.[17]

SPO3 Myrna Ricasa prepared the crime report and was part of the group that conducted the police line-up on 13 March 1992. Witnesses to the abduction identified the accused from among five line-ups. JOSEPHINE identified ABELLA as among the passengers of the Ford Fiera. EVELYN pointed to GRANADA; Roy Ronquillo and Noel Estorel, who were not presented as witnesses, identified DE GUZMAN and VALENCIA, respectively.[18]

Appellants advanced alibi as their defense. They all claim to have attended the panata at the Punta Sta. Ana chapel on 8 March 1992 from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., save for ABELLA whose attendance was excused. The panata is a religious practice of the INC held for seven consecutive days as preparation for the santa cena or holy supper. In 1992, the panata was held from 8 to 14 March 1992 and the santa cena, on 15 March 1992.[19] VALENCIA testified that after the panata on 8 March 1992, he went home to San Juan, Metro Manila; it was then about 11:00 p.m.[20] For his part, GRANADA claimed that after attending the panata, he left the Iglesia compound with Filemon and Marilou Garcia. The three arrived at the Garcia residence in Bacood, Sta. Mesa, at 11:00 p.m. Filemon and GRANADA had snacks and watched two movies on the video player. It was already past midnight when GRANADA went home.[21]GRANADA’s testimony was corroborated by both Filemon and Marilou.[22]

ABELLA was a member of the PNP highway patrol group assigned to Mobile Unit No. 13 in March of 1992. His tour of duty was from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. He was previously granted exemption from attending the panata. Together with PO3 Ferdinand Parolina, he patrolled Roxas Boulevard from the corner of T.M. Kalaw St. to the corner of Vito Cruz St. on 8 March 1992. ABELLA and Parolina parted ways at 10:15 p.m.[23] PO3 Parolina, who drove the mobile car, corroborated ABELLA’s testimony.[24]

According to former accused Bienvenido Tugay, on 11 March 1992 at 11:00 p.m., Major Joe Pring arrived at the Iglesia compound in Punta, Sta. Ana, with police officers, demanding entrance inside the premises. Since there was no order from his superior allowing outsiders to enter the compound, Tugay refused. Enraged, Pring asked for the names of Tugay’s companions. Tugay enumerated the names of appellants.[25]

The following day, appellants read their names in newspapers as among the perpetrators of the crime. Alarmed, they consulted the INC Central Office on what steps to take. Accompanied by Atty. Restituto Lazaro of the Iglesia’s legal department, appellants proceeded to see Gen. Diokno at the Western Police District Headquarters on 13 March 1992 “to clear their names.” Major Pring brought them to his office and hurriedly organized a police line-up. During the line-up Major Pring allegedly tapped all the accused on the shoulder as a signal to the prosecution witnesses for identifying them. Accordingly, appellants were identified.[26]

On 7 February 1995, after several instances where defense counsel questioned his orders and doubted his partiality, Judge Nitafan inhibited himself from further hearing the cases. The cases were re-raffled to Branch 35 presided over by Judge Ramon P. Makasiar, who penned the decision on 15 November 1996 convicting the accused.[27] The dispositive portion reads:

WHEREFORE, judgment is rendered pronouncing the four accused in these cases: JUANITO ABELLA y GARCIA, DIOSDADO GRANADA y SALCEDO, BENJAMIN DE GUZMAN y LABASAN, and EDGARDO VALENCIA y VILLANUEVA guilty beyond reasonable doubt of MURDER on five (5) counts, and sentencing each of them to the penalties of five (5) reclusion perpetua, and to pay the costs in proportionate shares.

The said four accused are further ordered, jointly and severally, to pay:

To Erlinda Ronquillo and Betty Ronquillo
P91,607.70 for actual damages,
P500,000.00 to each of them for moral damages,
P500,000.00 to each of them for exemplary damages;
To Domingo Tamayo
P33,125.50 for actual damages,
P500,000 for moral damages,
P500,000 for exemplary damages;
To Andres Lojero, Sr.
P60,716.00 for actual damages,
P1,000,000.00 for moral damages,
P1,000,000.00 for exemplary damages.

SO ORDERED.[28]

This decision was amended to include an award of P50,000 as indemnity for the death of each of the victims.[29]

Appellants are now before us contending that the trial court erred:

I

IN FINDING THAT THERE WAS POSITIVE AND CLEAR IDENTIFICATION OF THE ACCUSED IN THE ALLEGED ABDUCTION OF THE VICTIMS;

II

IN GIVING CREDENCE TO THE TESTIMONY OF ALLEGED EYEWITNESS ELENA BERNARDO;

III

IN HOLDING THAT CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE ADDUCED BY THE PROSECUTION IS SUFFICIENT TO SUSTAIN CONVICTION;

IV

IN FINDING ACCUSED’S DEFENSE OF ALIBI WEAK;

V

IN HOLDING THAT TREACHERY WAS PRESENT TO QUALIFY THE CRIME TO MURDER; and

VI

IN RULING THAT THE VOLUNTARY SURRENDER OF THE ACCUSED DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCE.[30]

As to the first assignment of error, appellants contend that reliance on the testimonies of JOSEPHINE and EVELYN is misguided. In JOSEPHINE’s testimony she expressly named the abductors as GRANADA and a “good-looking guy,” referring to ABELLA, who “could be easily remembered”; but in her sworn statement she only mentioned GRANADA. Such omission of an important detail casts doubt on the veracity of her identification of ABELLA. Neither did EVELYN identify ABELLA, De Guzman and Valencia during the police line-up and in her sworn statement of 11 March 1992, although she pointed to all appellants when she testified in court. That GRANADA was recognized both by JOSEPHINE and EVELYN in a dimly lit place at night because of his gray hair is likewise unworthy of belief.

Appellants claim in their second assignment of error that ELENA’s testimony was a mere concoction with loopholes that were revealed during cross-examination. Her insistence that all the victims were stabbed was disproved by medico-legal findings. Her testimony was uncorroborated by either testimonial or physical evidence and was even contradicted by the ocular inspection as observed by the presiding judge himself. Admittedly holding a grudge against GRANADA, she is a biased witness motivated by vindictiveness.

In their third assignment of error, appellants allege that the circumstances relied upon by the trial court were not established with certainty. The only circumstances proven were the basketball altercation, the stoning of the Ronquillos’ house, FELIX’s attempt to flee and the fact that the victims were fished out of the Pasig River. Testimonies on the abduction are patently inconsistent with each other. Nothing connects the appellants to the basketball altercation or the stoning of the Ronquillos’ house. The link between appellants and the De los Santos brothers is tenuous.

Appellants next assert that their defense of alibi gained strength because they were not positively identified. They further maintain that the use of superior force as a qualifying circumstance was not alleged in the information and could not therefore serve to elevate the killing to murder. Neither could treachery be considered, as there were no witnesses to the actual killing. Lastly, appellants equate their move to “clear their names” to the mitigating circumstance of voluntary surrender.

We affirm the conviction of appellants. After a careful scrutiny of the witnesses’ testimonies, we find that all the appellants were positively identified as the ones who abducted and killed the victims.

I

JOSEPHINE readily recognized GRANADA from among the abductors who alighted from the Fiera, as he was her neighbor and she has known him since she was a child. In spite of the black handkerchief covering GRANADA’s face, JOSEPHINE was familiar with his physique and physical features, particularly his prematurely graying hair. She was in front of the victims when they were abducted.[31] When part of the face of the accused is not visible, positive identification is difficult. Nevertheless when despite such artifice the witness is familiar with the accused,[32] or his identity is not sufficiently hidden due to his physical appearance,[33] or there are extraneous factors,[34] recognition is facilitated. Identification becomes quite an easy task even from a considerable distance, once a person has gained familiarity with another.[35]

With regard to ABELLA, JOSEPHINE was able to recognize him as one of the abductors because he had no cover on his face and he was a “good-looking guy” who “could easily be remembered.” The alleged inconsistency between her sworn statement where she failed to mention ABELLA and her testimony in court is imaginary. JOSEPHINE’s testimony was merely an amplification of her sworn statement in which she admitted:

T: Maliban kina BOBOT, JOEY at GENER, mayroon ka pa bang nakilala?

S: Mayroon pa po akong namukhaan ngunit hindi ko alam ang kanilang mga pangalan.[36]

It is probable that she found out ABELLA’s name only after the sworn statement was executed. There is no inconsistency when what the witness stated in open court are but details or additional facts not mentioned in the affidavit.[37]

EVELYN testified that she recognized the appellants as among the abductors of the victims and then proceeded to name them in court.[38] She particularly recognized GRANADA, as she had seen him on several occasions. Her assertion that GRANADA’s face was not covered, contrary to JOSEPHINE’s testimony, does not detract from the fact that GRANADA was indeed one of the abductors. The handkerchief covering GRANADA’s face could have fallen off in the course of the commotion. Besides, it is not to be expected that all witnesses viewed the abduction at the same stages.

WILFREDO was part of the victims’ group when the abduction took place, but he ran for safety after one of the abductors fired warning shots. He allegedly recognized GRANADA despite the handkerchief on the latter’s face. GRANADA’s white hair and pointed nose became rooted in WILFREDO’s consciousness as GRANADA got off the van, introduced himself as a policeman, and fired two warning shots. Most often the face and body movements of the assailant create an impression which cannot be easily erased from memory.[39]

Not only was WILFREDO physically present and an eyewitness when the abduction took place, but more importantly two of the victims were his brothers. Blood relatives have a definite stake at seeing the guilty person brought before the courts so that justice may be served. It would be unnatural for a relative who is interested in vindicating the crime to accuse somebody other than the real culprit.[40]

II

ELENA’s testimony is sufficient to convict appellants. She positively identified all the appellants as among the passengers of the Fiera and whom she saw torturing the victims. She could not have been mistaken in identifying them because she knew them very well, they being deacons of the INC.[41] She was only four meters away when the Fiera passed by her.[42]Her identification must have been confirmed when appellants alighted from the Fiera and proceeded to the so-called basement. Out of curiosity, she followed and stayed near the door of the basement[43] where she saw appellants and their cohorts maul and torture the victims. Although the electric lights inside the compound were switched off she could see the culprits and the mauling of the victims, since the place was illuminated by two streetlights outside.[44]

The appellants attack, for being contrary to physical evidence, ELENA’s testimony that she saw some of their cohorts, particularly Boy Valencia and Virgilio de Guzman, stab the victims. Indeed, the post -mortem examination on the bodies of the victims yielded no finding of stab wounds. This physical evidence is a mute and an eloquent manifestation of truth; it rates high in the hierarchy of trustworthy evidence.[45] Thus, where the physical evidence runs counter to the testimony of the prosecution witness, as in this case, the former should prevail.[46] At any rate, when asked on cross-examination whether the victims suffered stab wounds, ELENA answered, “Siguro po, hindi ko po alam.”[47]

ELENA must have been mistaken in her observation of the events or in her recollection. But this is understandable, as several persons were actively engaged in the mauling of the victims. It would have been highly unlikely for her to remember accurately their movements. Lapse of time blurs recollections. Human memory can be treacherous. It is a very common thing for honest witnesses to confuse their recollection of what they actually observed with what they have persuaded themselves to have happened or with impressions and conclusions not really drawn from their actual knowledge.[48]

While ELENA’s testimony on the stabbing does not ring true in the face of the physical evidence, this does not mean that her entire testimony is false or had been contrived. It is significant to note that her identification of the appellants as malefactors was corroborated by the other prosecution witnesses, who pointed to them as the victims’ abductors. Moreover, her testimony that they and their cohorts had beaten the victims by using lead pipes and blunt instruments was corroborated by the autopsy report, which revealed that most of the victims sustained lacerated wounds, contusions and hematoma.

There is a general principle of law that where a witness has testified falsely to some material matter in a case, his testimony in other respects maybe disregarded unless it is corroborated by other proof. This rule of law is expressed in the maxim “Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.” This rule, however, has its own limitations, for when the mistaken statement is consistent with good faith and is not conclusively indicative of a deliberate perversion, the believable portion of the testimony should be admitted. Although a person may err in memory or in observation in one or more respects, he may have told the truth as to other respects.[49] Elsewise stated, the maxim deals only with the weight of evidence and is not a positive rule of universal application and should not be applied to portions of the testimony corroborated by other evidence, particularly where the false portions could be innocent mistakes.[50]

Notwithstanding the false or mistaken statements, the trial judge, Judge Makasiar, found ELENA’s version “impressive, as the manner of her narration was straightforward, sincere, candid, frank and terse.”[51] Like the other prosecution witnesses, she had been subjected to “searching, grueling and consuming cross-examination by a determined, brilliant, veteran and astute defense counsel, no less than retired Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas, such that any falsehood and fabrication in [her] narration and identification of the four accused … could have been easily detected and exposed.” But she passed the test.

Settled is the rule that the factual findings of the trial court, especially on the credibility of witnesses are accorded great weight and respect. This is so because the trial court has the advantage of observing the witnesses through the different indicators of truthfulness or falsehood, such as the angry flush of an insisted assertion, the sudden pallor of a discovered lie, the tremulous mutter of a reluctant answer, or the forthright tone of a ready reply; or the furtive glance, the blush of conscious shame, the hesitation, the sincere or the flippant sneering tone, the heat, the calmness, the yawn, the sigh, the candor or lack of it, the scant or full realization of the solemnity of an oath, the carriage and mien.[52]

Admittedly, ELENA’s testimony has some discrepancies. However, the trial court emphasized:

[I]t is to be expected that some discrepancies, and even self-contradictions, will appear on cross-examination, especially where the witness is of inferior mental capacity and without any experience in court proceedings, like Elena Bernardo.[53]

The trial court correctly likened Elena’s testimony against appellants, all of whom were ranking members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, as a declaration against interest. This was so because her act of testifying against them put her in danger of being expelled from the said sect. In fact, as admitted by Pastor Cesar Almedina, he and many other local officials of the Church recommended her expulsion allegedly on grounds of non-attendance at church services and violation of the teachings, doctrines, laws and tenets of the Iglesia, which were not, however, specified by him. But the recommendation was disapproved by the Central Office because of these cases.[54]

While ELENA admitted to having a grudge against GRANADA for arresting his son-in-law sometime in 1991, her identification of him as one of the perpetrators of the crime charged cannot be disregarded because it was strongly corroborated by the three other prosecution witnesses, who categorically pointed to him as one of the abductors. Her honesty in admitting her dislike against GRANADA should be considered in her favor.[55] The existence of such grudge does not automatically render her testimony false and unreliable.[56] It must be noted that she had no known quarrel with the other appellants to be considered as sufficient motive in implicating them. Where there is no evidence and nothing to indicate that a witness for the prosecution was actuated by improper motive, the presumption is that she was not so actuated.

As to her long silence or reluctance to give her statement or to testify, ELENA explained that she was initially barred by then Judge Nitafan from testifying. Besides, there was a threat on her life by one of the suspects in the killing of herein five victims.[57] Nevertheless, she had already reported the incident to a certain Brother Cerilo del Rosario, who replaced Pastor Almedina after the latter was transferred to another chapel, and that sometime in 1993 she went to the Central Office of the INC and related the whole event to Brother Eduardo Manalo.[58]

At any rate, the failure of a witness to report to the police authorities the crime that she had witnessed is not a matter affecting her credibility. The natural reticence of most people to get involved in a criminal case is of judicial notice.[59]

III

Concededly, there were no eyewitnesses to the actual killing of the victims. But the following of circumstances leave no shred of doubt that the appellants were the perpetrators of the crime:

On the morning of 7 March 1992, the victims MARLON and JOSEPH had a basketball altercation with JOEY and his two companions;
Later that day, JOEY was caught bringing two pillboxes to Dalisay Street, where the victims reside;
Between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. of 8 March 1992, JOEY and GENER, both members of the INC, threw stones at the Ronquillos’ house, attracting the attention of neighbors who in turn mauled them;
Between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. of that same date, after the De los Santos brothers pointed at the victims, the appellants and their cohorts picked up and herded the victims into a Ford Fiera, which then sped away;
At about 10:00 p.m. the victims, except the one lying in the vehicle who seemed either unconscious or dead, were brought to a so-called basement in the Iglesia compound in Punta, Sta. Ana.There, they were mauled, tortured and beaten by appellants, who were deacons of the INC, as well as by their cohorts, using steel tubes, lead pipes, guns and other blunt instruments. Thereafter, they were loaded into the van, which forthwith sped out of the compound; and
Three days later, or on 10 March 1992, the victims’ bodies were found floating on the Pasig River, showing signs of foul play.

These circumstances are sufficient to establish the guilt of the appellants beyond reasonable doubt of the crime charged. They constitute an unbroken chain which leads to one fair and reasonable conclusion pointing to the appellants, to the exclusion of all others, as the guilty persons.[60]

IV

As for appellants’ defense of alibi, we have consistently held this to be the weakest of all the defenses. Appellants were unable to show that it was physically impossible for them to have been present at the scene of the crime. GRANADA, DE GUZMAN and VALENCIA claimed to have been attending the “Panata” rites on 8 March 1992, the date of the abduction and mauling of the five victims. However, considering that there were at least 200 members of the INC who attended the panata, it was possible for them to have sneaked out unnoticed into the Ford Fiera to Lakas Street, picked up the five victims and waited in the evening for the grounds to be deserted before bringing them inside the INC compound. Neither was ABELLA able to show by clear and convincing evidence that it was physically impossible for him to go from his alleged post at the corner of T.M. Kalaw St. and Roxas Boulevard to Lakas Street, Bacood, Sta. Mesa. Thus, appellants’ defense of alibi must fail. Besides, such defense is worthless in view of the positive identification of appellants as the culprits.

V

We agree with the trial court that the killing was characterized by treachery. It is true that treachery should normally attend at the inception of the aggression. However, when the victim was first seized and bound and then slain, treachery is present.[61] In this case, it is enough to point out that the victims’ hands were tied at the back when their bodies were found floating in Pasig River. This fact clearly shows that the victims were rendered defenseless and helpless, thereby allowing the appellants to commit the crime without risk at all to their persons.

The circumstance of abuse of superior strength was absorbed in treachery and cannot be considered as an independent aggravating circumstance. It need not be alleged in the information, as treachery was adequate to elevate the killing to murder.

VI

We cannot equate appellants’ move to “clear their names” as voluntary surrender. For a surrender to be voluntary, it must be spontaneous and should show the intent of the accused to submit himself unconditionally to the authorities, either because (1) he acknowledges his guilt or (2) he wishes to save the government the trouble and expense necessarily included for his search and capture.[62] In an analogous case, we have held that when the accused goes to a police station merely to clear his name and not to give himself up, voluntary surrender may not be appreciated.[63]

Lastly, we affirm the awards made by the trial court except as to the awards of moral and exemplary damages, which are, however, reduced from P500,000 to P50,000 each.

WHEREFORE, the challenged decision of Branch 35 of the Regional Trial Court of Manila in Criminal Cases Nos. 96-104529 to -33 is hereby AFFIRMED with the modification that the awards of moral and exemplary damages are hereby reduced from P500,000 to P50,000 each.

SO ORDERED.

‘Same-sex synod’ what? By Sr. Teresa R. Tunay, OCDS

…and that’s the truth [from CBCP News]

THEY are at it again—those who have an axe to grind against the Catholic Church are finding media morsels to feast upon at the ongoing Synod of Bishops in the Vatican. Further exploiting Pope Francis’ most misconstrued quote “Who am I to judge?”, these people with special interests label what is actually a synod on the family as “same-sex synod”, a “novelty”, an occasion for “hundreds of celibate men” to display once more their “obsession with sex” colliding head on with their “puritanical idealism”. It is high season for optimistic militant LGBT entities to repackage and resell their pet theories while judging the bishops and the Church as being “outdated” and woefully out of touch with reality.

I follow with mixed amusement and compassion the ways anti-Church advocates—claiming “human rights”—manipulate mainstream and social media to advance their agenda. They start with looking oppressed—as though gays were the most tyrannized people on planet Earth. But are they, seriously? At least in the Philippines, they are far from oppressed—they are not only accepted, they are loved, adored, and some are even envied for their wealth and popularity. And their gifts and talents are not just acknowledged by the Church but are welcomed and utilized in its ministry. I have heard of gay boys being rejected by their fathers, but only in the movies. All the gay persons I know have no problem with acceptance.

The earliest memories I have of gays are those about the two men in charge of our town’s Flores de Mayo. “Dalawang bakla lang ang gumagawa ng lahat diyan,” my mother would admiringly inform us, referring to the two middle-aged unmarried men—with soft wrists and hard core devotion to the Virgin Mary—who would virtually bloom whenever Santacruzan time came around. They recruited sagalas, assigned Reinas their consortes, supervised the makeup, the flower arrangements, the carroza decoration—everything! It never occurred to me that they were different—maybe I was too naïve to notice, just as I was too innocent to appreciate the biggest role in the Santacruzan given to me—Ang Babaeng Samaritana.

No, I think the LGBT champions want more than mere acceptance—they want “gay rights” to be recognized as human rights. They want marriage (just like the straights), they want their own “family” of adopted kids, and in the process they try to “revolutionize” Church teaching in the name of human rights. What’s sad is they don’t seem to understand that by fighting for “gay rights” they are seeking affirmation based on mere sexuality. In a sense they are actually asking people to measure their worth by the yardstick of sexual preference, thereby wasting their own potential as human beings.

Claiming that the only natural love they know (and the act that accompanies it) is one for and with another person of the same gender, they argue that they have a right to find happiness in love. “Kasalanan ko bang ipinanganak akong isang sirena?” (Is it my fault that I was born a mermaid?), a lot of gay men I know have jokingly asked. Like any other person they look for someone to love, be loved by, and when they do, they have sex without babies (to put it bluntly). It’s sex to please oneself and the beloved. Pleasure blinds the indulgent, and this is where their problem worsens. They drop out of Church, or in any case stop listening to “God talk”—instead they choose listen to “the other side”, and from there it’s a slippery slope to perdition.

Somebody has to remind them of their “divine rights”, to convince them that they are—like everybody else, inside or outside the Catholic Church—children of a kind and loving God. As such we have a right to ask for strength from our Father in times of temptation. As His children we all are bound by love to listen to God’s voice, to seek His will in everything we do—and certainly, wasting sexual energy is not one of them.

“Who says you have to have sex with your boyfriend to express your love?” I tell this to my gay friends who seem to flit from one fling to another in search of happiness in love. (They keep getting brokenhearted anyway). “Happiness in love is not found in human love alone—perhaps, in ‘making you a sirena’ God wants to be your siyukoy (merman)! But if you keep complaining and marching in the streets for your gay rights, how can you hear the Father telling you He loves you?”

It is said that hope springs eternal in the human breast. And so my gay friends still hope that with such a dynamic pope as Francis at the helm, the ongoing synod of bishops will maybe allow same-sex marriage. “You see,” I tell them, “you’re just listening to the noise! The Church will continue to love you dearly but it will never bless your same-sex union and call it marriage.” And that’s the truth.

ROME REPORTS - During Sunday's Mass, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that the Church celebrates World Mission Sunday and the love that Blessed Paul VI had for the evangelization.

POPE FRANCIS
"And this exhortation is still relevant, it's very relevant! It is important to consider this aspect of Paul VI's pontificate, especially today, when we celebrate the World Mission Day”.

The World Mission Day was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 as a way to renew the Church's commitment to spreading the Gospel.

On the occasion of the celebration, the Pontifical Mission Societies has released statistics on the situation of the Church's mission around the world.

The report, which is based on data collected on Dec. 31st, 2012, states that of the 7 billion people in the world, more than 1.2 billion are Catholic. Those numbers indicate an increase of 15 million Catholics since last year, the highest increase coming from the Americas with 6.5 million Catholics.

The report also states that while there is an increase of Catholics in the world, the overall percentage has experienced a slight decrease of 0.01%. However, the percentage of Catholics in America and Asia have increased by 0.12% and 0.01%, respectively.

While the Pontifical Mission Societies stated there are decreasing numbers of religious and missionaries, the number of priests has risen by 895, for a total of 414,313 worldwide.

The statistical report concluded stating that the Church continues to thrive in the field of education, with over 60 million students in primary and secondary schools as well as universities. The Catholic Church also boasts over 115,000 charitable and healthcare institutions.

TIME News: What the Vatican Really Said About Homosexuality

TIME News - It's not the big shift people think it is

The Catholic world and the media were riled Monday by a Vatican document interpreted by many as signaling a softer church stance toward homosexuality, but the inclusive tone of the document is a long way from actual policy change.

At issue are three words most people have never heard of: Relatio post disceptationem. That’s the name of the document the Catholic Church’s Extraordinary Synod of the Bishops released Monday, one week into the Synod’s gathering to discuss the state of the family in the modern world. It translates, “Report After Debate,” and it was read aloud in the Synod hall to kick off the Synod’s second week. One of the report’s 58 sections—the one causing the biggest stir—is titled, “Welcoming homosexual persons.”

“Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community,” the passage begins. “Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a Church that offers them a welcoming home. Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?”

For a Church that has historically linked the word “homosexual” with the word “sin,” the idea of welcoming gays in any capacity can appear to be a significant move. Headlines immediately spoke of a “dramatic shift” and a “more tolerant” stance from the church.

But before rushing to conclusions, everyone, on all sides, should calm down.

First, here’s what the document actually is:

The relatio is a mid-Synod snapshot of 200+ Catholic leaders’ conversations that happened in the Synod hall last week. It is a starting point for conversations as the Synod fathers start small group discussions this week. It is a working text that identifies where bishops need to “deepen or clarify our understanding,” as Cardinal Luis Antonia Tagle put it in Monday’s press briefing. That means that the topic of gays and Catholic life came up in the Synod conversations so far and that it is a topic for continued reflection.

Second, here’s what the document is not:

The relatio is not a proscriptive text. It is not a decree. It is not doctrine, and certainly not a doctrinal shift. It is also not final. “These are not decisions that have been made nor simply points of view,” the document concludes. “The reflections put forward, the fruit of the Synodal dialogue that took place in great freedom and a spirit of reciprocal listening, are intended to raise questions and indicate perspectives that will have to be matured and made clearer by the reflection of the local Churches in the year that separates us from the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of bishops planned for October 2015.”

So, what does all of that mean? Cardinal Tagle perhaps said it best when he said at Monday’s press briefing, with a smile, “The drama continues.”

The relatio reaffirms at several points that marriage is between a man and a woman. Substance on that point is not changing. The Vatican has been repeatedly clear that this Synod will bring no changes to doctrine, or even a final document with new rites. To “welcome gays” does not mean the Church is no longer equating “gay” with “sin.”

Instead, tone—as it has always been with the Francis papacy—is what is on the table. The style that Pope Francis lives is one that starts with a spirit of embrace, of mercy, and not with sin. It begins with figuring out at what points embrace is possible before determining the points at which it is not. That may be one reason why people like top Vatican watcher John Thavis are calling this mid-synod report “an earthquake.”

But it is also important to remember that the Synod on the Family is almost a two-year-long process, and this snapshot is just that, a snapshot of one week in that process. There will be more such snapshot documents in the coming months. The conversation started earlier this year when bishops around the world surveyed their congregations about family life, it kicked off more formally last week with the gathering in Rome, next the bishops will take the conversations back to their communities, next summer there’s the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia (a traditionally conservative American diocese), and then finally next fall there will be the second Synod with even more bishops from around the world with even more discussion.

Looking for revolution can be misleading. It can mar the actual story of what is and what is not happening. Casual Vatican observers—especially those in the United States, where conversations about sexuality have a different trajectory than in the Vatican or in many developing countries—should be careful to not read into the conversation what they want to hear. The interest in a relatio, a relatively obscure document, does however point to another shift: people actually care about what a group of bishops is doing.

That itself, for many, may be a revolution.

On the 'Iglesia Ni Cristo" Church by CatholicSay

The Iglesia ni Cristo (Tagalog, “Church of Christ”) claims to be the true Church established by Christ. Felix Manalo, its founder, proclaimed himself God’s prophet. Many tiny sects today claim to be the true Church, and many individuals claim to be God’s prophet. What makes Iglesia ni Cristo different is that it is not as tiny as others.

Since it was founded in the Philippines in 1914, it has grown to more than two hundred congregations in sixty-seven countries outside the Philippines, including an expanding United States contingent. The Iglesia keeps the exact number of members secret, but it is estimated to be between three million and ten million worldwide. It is larger than the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a better known sect (which also claims to be Christ’s true Church). Iglesia is not better known, despite its numbers, because the majority of Iglesia’s members are Filipino. Virtually the only exceptions are a few non-Filipinos who have married into Iglesia families.

The organization publishes two magazines, Pasugo and God’s Message, which devote most of their energies toward condemning other Christian churches, especially the Catholic Church. The majority of the Iglesia’s members are ex-Catholics. The Philippines is the only dominantly Catholic nation in the Far East, with eighty-four percent of its population belonging to the Church. Since this is its largest potential source of converts, Iglesia relies on anti-Catholic scare tactics as support for its own doctrines, which cannot withstand biblical scrutiny. The Iglesia tries to convince people of its doctrines not by proving they are right, but by attempting to prove the Catholic Church’s teachings are wrong.

Is Christ God?

The Catholic teaching that most draws Iglesia’s fire is Christ’s divinity. Like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Iglesia claims that Jesus Christ is not God but a created being.

Yet the Bible is clear: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). We know Jesus is the Word because John 1:14 tells us, “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” God the Father was not made flesh; it was Jesus, as even Iglesia admits. Jesus is the Word, the Word is God, therefore Jesus is God. Simple, yet Iglesia won’t accept it.

In Deuteronomy 10:17 and 1 Timothy 6:15, God the Father is called the “Lord of lords,” yet in other New Testament passages this divine title is applied directly to Jesus. In Revelation 17:14 we read, “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings.” And in Revelation 19:13–16, John sees Jesus “clad in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. . . . On his thigh he has a name inscribed, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

The fact that Jesus is God is indicated in numerous places in the New Testament. John 5:18 states that Jewish leaders sought to kill Jesus “because he not only broke the Sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.” Paul also states that Jesus was equal with God (Phil. 2:6). But if Jesus is equal with the Father, and the Father is a God, then Jesus is a God. Since there is only one God, Jesus and the Father must both be one God—one God in at least two persons (the Holy Spirit, of course, is the third person of the Trinity).

The same is shown in John 8:56–59, where Jesus directly claims to be Yahweh (“I AM”). “‘Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’ So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.” Jesus’ audience understood exactly what he was claiming; that is why they picked up rocks to stone him. They considered him to be b.aspheming God by claiming to be Yahweh.

The same truth is emphasized elsewhere. Paul stated that we are to live “awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). And Peter addressed his second epistle to “those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours in the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:1).

Jesus is shown to be God most dramatically when Thomas, finally convinced that Jesus has risen, falls down and exclaims, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)—an event many in Iglesia have difficulty dealing with. When confronted with this passage in a debate with Catholic Answers founder Karl Keating, Iglesia apologist Jose Ventilacion replied with a straight face, “Thomas was wrong.”

God’s Messenger?

A litmus test for any religious group is the credibility of its founder in making his claims. Felix Manalo’s credibility and, consequently, his claims, are impossible to take seriously. He claimed to be “God’s messenger,” divinely chosen to re-establish the true Church which, according to Manalo, disappeared in the first century due to apostasy. It was his role to restore numerous doctrines that the Church had abandoned. A quick look at Manalo’s background shows where these doctrines came from: Manalo stole them from other quasi-Christian religious sects.

Manalo was baptized a Catholic, but he left the Church as a teen. He became a Protestant, going through five different denominations, including the Seventh-day Adventists. Finally, Manalo started his own church in 1914. In 1919, he left the Philippines because he wanted to learn more about religion. He came to America, to study with Protestants, whom Iglesia would later declare to be apostates, just like Catholics. Why, five years after being called by God to be his “last messenger,” did Manalo go to the U.S. to learn from apostates? What could God’s messenger learn from a group that, according to Iglesia, had departed from the true faith?

The explanation is that, contrary to his later claims, Manalo did not believe himself to be God’s final messenger in 1914. He didn’t use the last messenger doctrine until 1922. He appears to have adopted the messenger doctrine in response to a schism in the Iglesia movement. The schism was led by Teogilo Ora, one of its early ministers. Manalo appears to have developed the messenger doctrine to accumulate power and re-assert his leadership in the church.

This poses a problem for Iglesia, because if Manalo had been the new messenger called by God in 1914, why didn’t he tell anybody prior to 1922? Because he didn’t think of it until 1922. His situation in this respect parallels that of Mormonism’s founder Joseph Smith, who claimed that when he was a boy, God appeared to him in a vision and told him all existing churches were corrupt and he was not to join them, that he would lead a movement to restore God’s true Church. But historical records show that Smith did join an inquirer’s class at an established Protestant church after his supposed vision from God. It was only in later years that Smith came up with his version of the “true messenger” doctrine, proving as much of an embarrassment for the Mormon church as Manalo’s similar doctrine does for Iglesia.

Iglesia Prophesied?

A pillar of Iglesia belief is that its emergence in the Philippines was prophesied in the Bible. This idea is supposedly found in Isaiah 43:5–6, which states, “Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give up,’ and the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth.’”

Iglesia argues that in this verse, Isaiah is referring to the “far east” and that this is the place where the “Church of Christ” will emerge in the last days. This point is constantly repeated in Iglesia literature: “The prophecy stated that God’s children shall come from the far east” (Pasugo, March 1975, 6).

But the phrase “far east” is not in the text. In fact, in the Tagalog (Filipino) translation, as well as in the original Hebrew, the words “far” and “east” are not even found in the same verse, yet the Iglesia recklessly combine the two verses to translate “far east.” Using this fallacious technique, Iglesia claims that the far east refers to the Philippines.

Iglesia is so determined to convince its followers of this “fact” that it quotes Isaiah 43:5 from an inexact paraphrase by Protestant Bible scholar James Moffatt that reads, “From the far east will I bring your offspring.” Citing this mistranslation, one Iglesia work states, “Is it not clear that you can read the words ‘far east’? Clear! Why does not the Tagalog Bible show them? That is not our fault, but that of those who translated the Tagalog Bible from English—the Catholics and Protestants” (Isang Pagbubunyag Sa Iglesia ni Cristo, 1964:131). The Iglesia accuses everyone else of mistranslating the Bible, when it is Iglesia that is taking liberties with the original language.

The Name Game

Iglesia points to its name as proof it is the true Church. They argue, “What is the name of Christ’s Church, as given in the Bible? It is the ‘Church of Christ.’ Our church is called the ‘Church of Christ.’ Therefore, ours is the Church Christ founded.”

Whether or not the exact words “Church of Christ” appear in the Bible is irrelevant, but since Iglesia makes it an issue, it is important to note that the phrase “Church of Christ” never once appears in the Bible.

The verse Iglesia most often quotes on this issue is Romans 16:16: “Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you ” (Pasugo, November 1973, 6). But the phrase in this verse is “churches of Christ.” And it’s not a technical name. Paul is referring to a collection of local churches, not giving an organizational name.

To get further “proof” of its name, Iglesia cites Acts 20:28: “Take heed therefore . . . to feed the church of Christ which he has purchased with his blood” (Lamsa translation; cited in Pasugo, April 1978). But the Lamsa translation is not based on the original Greek, the language in which the book of Acts was written. In Greek, the phrase is “the church of God” (tan ekklasian tou Theou) not “the church of Christ” (tan ekklasian tou Christou). Iglesia knows this, yet it continues to mislead its members.

Even if the phrase “church of Christ” did appear in the Bible, it would not help Iglesia’s case. Before Manalo started his church, there were already groups calling themselves “the Church of Christ.” There are several Protestant denominations that call themselves Church of Christ and use exactly the same argument. Of course, they aren’t the true Church for the same reason Iglesia isn’t—because they were not founded by Christ.

Did Christ’s Church Apostatize?

The doctrines upon which all Iglesia’s other doctrines depend is its teaching that Christ’s Church apostatized in the early centuries. Like Mormonism, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other fringe groups, Iglesia asserts that the early Christian Church suffered a total apostasy. It believes in “the complete disappearance of the first-century Church of Christ and the emergence of the Catholic Church” (Pasugo, July-Aug. 1979, 8).

But Jesus promised that his Church would never apostatize. He told Peter, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). If his Church had apostatized, then the gates of hell would have prevailed against it, making Christ a liar.

In other passages, Christ teaches the same truth. In Matthew 28:20 he said, “I am with you always even until the end of the world.” And in John 14:16, 18 he said, “And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever … I will not leave you desolate.”

If Iglesia members accept the apostasy doctrine, they make Christ a liar. Since they believe Jesus Christ is not a liar, they are ignoring what Christ promised, and their doctrine contradicts Scripture.

They are, however, fulfilling Scripture. While Jesus taught that his Church would never apostatize, the Bible does teach that there will be a great apostasy, or falling away from the Church. Paul prophesies: “[Do not] be quickly shaken in mind or excited . . . to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion [Greek: apostasia] comes first” (2 Thess. 2:2–3); “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1); and, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own liking, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths” (2 Tim. 4:3–4). By falling away from the Church, members of Iglesia are committing precisely the kind of apostasy of which they accuse the Catholic Church.

The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:1: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Was Felix Manalo a true prophet? Is his church the “true Church?” If we test the claims of Iglesia ni Cristo, the answer is apparent. His total apostasy doctrine is in flat contradiction to Christ’s teaching. Th

TIME News - The 'Pope Francis supports evolution' story is just the latest example of the press getting the Catholic church completely wrong

It is official: the media has gone bananas in its coverage of Pope Francis.

The OMG-Pope-Francis-Supports-Evolution story of the past two days is just the latest example. Almost every news outlet, major and minor, has plastered Pope Francis’ name across the interwebs and proclaimed he has finally planted the Catholic Church in the evolution camp of the creation-evolution debate. The only problem? Almost every outlet has got the story wrong, proving once again that the mainstream media has nearly no understanding of the Church. And that madness shows no signs of stopping.

Pope Francis’ real role in this evolution hubbub was small. He spoke, as Popes do, to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on Monday, which had gathered to discuss “Evolving Topics of Nature,” and he affirmed what Catholic teaching has been for decades. “God is not a divine being or a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life,” he said. “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

Anyone who knows anything about Catholic history knows that a statement like this is nothing new. Pope Pius XII wrote an encyclical “Humani Generis” in 1950 affirming that there was no conflict between evolution and Catholic faith. Pope John Paul II reaffirmed that, stressing that evolution was more than a hypothesis, in 1996. Pope Benedict XVI hosted a conference on the nuances of creation and evolution in 2006. There’s an official book on the event for anyone who wants to know more. Pope Francis’ comments Monday even came as he was unveiling a new statue of Pope Benedict XVI, honoring him for his leadership.

None of that seems to matter to the media; the internet exploded all the same. Site after site after site ramped up the Pope’s words and took them out of context. Headlines like these added drama: NPR: “Pope Says God Not ‘A Magician, With A Magic Wand.’” Salon: “Pope Francis schools creationists.” U.S. News and World Report: “Pope Francis Backs the Big Bang Theory, Evolution” (with a subhed: “Also, the pontiff says he’s not a communist”). Huffington Post. Sydney Morning Herald. Telegraph. USA Today. New York Post. The list goes on and on. Only Slate did its homework.

Wednesday morning the stories continued with new, analytical twists. The New Republic came out with a story titled, “The Pope Has More Faith Than the GOP in Science.” The Washington Post posted a piece, “Pope Francis may believe in evolution, but 42 percent of Americans do not.” It doesn’t seem to matter that Pope Benedict XVI called the debate between evolution an creation an “absurdity” in 2007. MSNBC opened its piece saying, “Pope Francis made a significant rhetorical break with Catholic tradition Monday by declaring that the theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real.” NBCNews called the Pope’s statement, “a theological break from his predecessor Benedict XVI, a strong exponent of creationism.”

This embarrassing narrative repeats itself over and over in Francis coverage. It happened last week when the Pope, again, voiced the Church’s long-standing opposition to the death penalty (having also done so in June, and after John Paul discussed the topic at length in an entire encyclical on being consistently pro-life in 1995). It happened at the Synod of the Bishops on the family, when the bishops talked about welcoming gays and the media whipped that up into an inaccurate story about an enormous policy shift toward gay marriage.

That’s dangerous, especially because this furor seems to occur most often when hot-button Western political issues can be tied to the Pope’s statements—evolution, death penalty, gay marriage. Wednesday morning, Pope Francis asked for prayers for 43 Mexican students who were burned alive by drug traffickers. It is unlikely that that will get the same pickup.

Moral of this story: Don’t believe most of what you read about the Vatican. Papal coverage has gone wild.

The Story of Martin Baani: the Iraqi seminarian who will not leave his people

No courage can be found, except in the Church of Christ - the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church of Christ. -CD2000

By John Pontifex

Erbil, Iraq, (CNS/Aid to the Church in Need).- Bombs are falling and the sound of the explosion is sending shock and fear into the hearts of the people. Amid the sound of crying and frenzied activity, people pack up what belongings they can carry and make off into the night.

In the midst of it all, on the night of Aug. 6, stands Martin Baani, a 24-year-old seminarian. It’s dawning on him that this is Karamlesh’s last stand.

For 1,800 years, Christianity has had a home in the hearts and minds of the people of this town so full of antiquity. Now that era is about to be brought to a calamitous end; Islamic State are advancing.

Martin’s mobile phone rings: a friend stammers out the news that the nearby town of Telkaif has fallen to “Da’ash” – the Arabic name for Islamic State. Karamlesh would surely be next.

Martin dashes out of his aunt’s house, where he is staying, and heads for the nearby St Addai’s Church. He takes the Blessed Sacrament, a bundle of official papers, and walks out of the church. Outside a car awaits – his parish priest, Father Thabet, and three other priests are inside.

Martin gets in and the car speeds off. They leave Karamlesh and the last remnants of the village’s Christian presence go with them.

Speaking to Martin in the calm of St. Peter’s Seminary, Ankawa – a suburb of the Kurdish regional capital of Erbil – it is difficult to imagine he is describing anything except a bad dream. But there is nothing dreamy in Martin’s expression. “Until the very last minute, the Peshmerga were telling us it was safe.”

“But then we heard that they were setting up big guns on St Barbara’s Hill (on the edge of the village) and we knew then the situation had become very dangerous.”

Taking stock of that terrible night, Martin’s confidence is bolstered by the presence of 27 other seminarians at St. Peter’s, many with their own stories of escape from the clutches of the Islamic militants.

Martin and his fellow students for the priesthood know that the future is bleak as regards Christianity in Iraq. A community of 1.5 million Christians before 2003 has dwindled to less than 300,000. And of those who remain, more than a third are displaced. Many, if not most, want a new life in a new country.

Martin, however, is not one of them. “I could easily go,” he explains calmly. “My family now live in California. I already have been given a visa to go to America and visit them.”

“But I want to stay. I don’t want to run away from the problem.”

Martin has already made the choice that marks out the priests who have decided to stay in Iraq: his vocation is to serve the people, come what may.

“We must stand up for our rights; we must not be afraid,” he explains.

Describing in detail the emergency relief work that has occupied so much of his time, it is plain to see that he feels his place is to be with the people.

Martin is already a subdeacon. Now in his final year of theology, ordination to the priesthood is but a few months away.

“Thank you for your prayers,” says Martin, as I take my leave of him. “We count on your support.”

"The myth of the tiny radical Muslim minority is just that – it’s a myth."

[Source: Western Journalism] In a new video, Truth Revolt’s Ben Shapiro took on the popular leftist talking point that radicals make up a tiny fraction of the overall Islamic population. Citing recent comments by Barack Obama and “horrifyingly mediocre actor” Ben Affleck, Shapiro used surveys from many of the nations with a large Muslim population to debunk such claims.

He conceded that other faiths, including Judaism and Christianity, hold certain violent texts sacred, though he made one unavoidable distinction.

“Believers in those particular texts are not currently ramming airlines into towers or beheading journalists or mutilating female genitalia,” he explained.

While actively violent jihadists are clearly a minority within the faith, Shapiro noted that far too many support such radical ideals.

“Almost 50 percent of Indonesians actually support strict sharia law, not just in Indonesia but in a lot of countries,” he said of the predominantly Muslim nation, “and 70 percent blame the United States, Israel, or somebody else for 9/11.”

Using those statistics, he estimated 143 million radical Muslims live within that country.

By determining how many Muslims in other nations hold a similar ideology, including a belief in honor killings or terror attacks, Shapiro concluded more than 800 million practitioners of the faith would qualify as extremists. That number includes nearly 500,000 living within the U.S.

“That’s not a minority,” he said, “that’s now a majority. The myth of the tiny radical Muslim minority is just that – it’s a myth. And unfortunately it’s a myth that’s going to get a lot of civilized people killed.”

Pasugo April 1966, p. 6
"...The Catholic Church which from the beginning was the Church of Christ (“Ang Iglesia Katolika na sa pasimula ay siyang Iglesia ni Cristo." )."

Pasugo July August 1988 pp. 6.
“Even secular history shows a direct time link between the Catholic Church and the Apostles, leading to the conclusion that the true Church of Christ [Iglesia ni Cristo] is the Catholic Church.”

A.D-- mahigit 1,957 years ago (as of 2014 AD).

Kaya may IGLESIA NI CRISTO na pala mula pa noong 57 A.D.

"First of all, I give thanks to my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because YOUR FAITH IS SPOKEN OF ALL OVER THE WORLD."

Kitam!

At kung "the true Church of Christ is back in the region" [Iglesia Ni  Cristo Today] eh bakit hanggang ngayon eh Pilipinas pa rin ang kanilang Central?

New International Version
I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.

New Living Translation
I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist.

English Standard Version
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.

New American Standard Bible
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

King James Bible
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

Holman Christian Standard Bible
Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

International Standard Version
For many deceivers have gone out into the world. They refuse to acknowledge Jesus the Messiah as having become human. Any such person is a deceiver and an antichrist.

New American Bible
Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful one and the antichrist.

The Jerusalem Bible
Many false teachers have appeared in the world, who will not acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in human flesh; here is the deceiver you were warned against, here is Antichrist.

Douay-Rheims Bible
For many seducers are gone out into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh: this is a seducer and an antichrist.

How Filipino Workers brought the Manalo Church- the Iglesia Ni Cristo® (INC-1914) to Europe and the Middle East

$

TheIglesia Ni Cristo® of Felix Manalo which was founded in the Philippines in 1914 was brought to Europe and the Middle East by migrant workers, thanks to the massive problem of unemployment in the Philippines. In contrast, Christianity was brought to the world by Catholic priests and nuns who are full-time missionaries. The rapid influx of Filipino Migrant Workers to other countries including Europe and the Middle East has contributed to the rapid evangelization of other Filipino Workers snatching ignorant Filipino Catholics to Manalo's recycled Arianism. It should be noted that NO INC Minister is has been full time missionary to countries that haven't been Christianized by Catholic Missionaries.  INC Ministers usually infest like parasites in places that have been cultivated and Christianized by Catholic Missionaries. Until now, INC Ministers do not have Bible Scholars and have relied heavily on Catholic and Protestant Versions of the Bible yet accused both Catholics and Protestants as "children of Satan" [PASUGO Disyembre 1965, p. 5; PASUGO Oktubre 1959, p. 5; PASUGO Agosto 1962, p. 9; PASUGO Oktubre 1956, p. 1]  As argued by INC Ministers, Felix Manalo only founded LOCALE CHURCHES implying that the ORIGINAL CHURCH is still in Jerusalem or Rome.  Upon close scrutiny, what Felix Manalo founded in the Philippines is NOT a locale but it's the CENTRAL CHURCH! Therefor proving that Felix Manalo FOUNDED the Iglesia Ni Cristo® and NOT Christ (Pasugo Agosto-Setyembre 1964, p. 5)The Iglesia Ni Cristo® is a FILIPINO FOUNDED CHURCH! This is manifested by the fact that all Head Ministers of every locale around the world are FILIPINO MINISTERS. This would ensure that all proceeds, donations and monetary collections are sent back to their Central Office Treasury in Diliman, Quezon City in the Philippines-- thus enriching the MANALO FAMILY! This is the reason why money is never a problem in the Iglesia Ni Cristo® of Felix Manalo. - CD2000

In the article below, I will attempt to refute the lies of Manalo's paid ministers (written in open-close parenthesis all in Blue font).

The unexplained unbiblical tri-color emblem of the Iglesia Ni Cristo® cult
EUROPE

The Northern Europe Ecclesiastical District

It was an official letter of the Executive Minister, Brother Erano G. Manalo, sent in late 1971 to the pioneering brethren in England that triggered the burgeoning of Iglesia ni Cristo congregations in the United Kingdom and to the entire Europe. The husband-and-wife tandem of Brother Colin Ringwood (married to a Filipina) and Sister Melba Angeles (Filipina) was instrumental in the establishment of the Church's first locale in the UK. Sister Melba met Brother Colin, an Englishman. She introduced the Church of Christ to him. He received instruction on Bible doctrines and baptism at San Francisco Locale, in California, USA in 1971. Back in England, the then newly wed couple received the Executive Minister's letter. As instructed, they combed the emerging Filipino community in search of fellow members (INC is a proudly Philippine-made church). One evening in late October 1972, some 20 brethren (all Filipinos?) showed up at 42 Priestly Garden Chadwell, Heath, Romford, Essex for the first official gathering of Church members in England. Before the meeting presided over by Brother Colin ended, a congregation complete with officers was formed. On November 15, the Executive Minister approved the establishment of the London committee prayer. (Thanks to Filipino Migrant Workers. Without them, the Manalo Clan would have no Business Company called the Iglesia Ni Cristo in the UK.)

The telephone greatly facilitated the emergence of prayer groups in Europe. Since receiving the Executive Minister's letter, the Ringwoods' daily life had become a virtually endless series of phone calls as they got in touch with other brethren. They were able to reach even those in Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. These brethren soon began holding prayer meetings and later worship services with tape-recorded sermons. Within ten years, fullfledged locales had taken deep root in major cities of these countries, including Austria. In May 1973, the Church of Christ was registered with the British government (Registered as the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) so as not to confuse other non-INC members who have registered another church called Church of Christ, of course name of founder was Felix Manalo). The registration was approved in September. After the purchase of a property in 32 Latchmere Road, Battersea, London, Brother Jose Salazar (a Filipino founded Church will always be controlled by a Filipino Minister to ensure the flow of money to the Philippines Central Church) was sent to oversee the Church's first locale in the UK. He arrived in London in June 1975, five months before the house of worship was dedicated to God. (God who? Father? Son? or the Holy Spirit? Does your Doxology confirmed the Triune One God?)

Across the English Channel that same year, a handful of brethren started holding prayer meetings at Sister Ruth Morales' house in Bonn, Germany (another Overseas Filipino Worker). It became a locale in 1986. In November 1987 the Dortmund Locale's first worship service was officiated at Blumstr. 36, Dortmund. Also, on March 7, 1979, the congregation in Hamburg, Germany held their first worship service at Sister Esther Elizaga's residence (another Filipino Migrant Worker) along Christian Forster Street. The Hamburg GWS became a locale in 1984. On April 27, I988 the Church of Christ was registered with the German government. (You mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo - Church of Christ)

The congregation in Frankfurt was the first in the Continent to have been blessed with a resident minister. Frankfurt gained locale status in September 1983 after two years as a group worship service. With the arrival of its first resident minister, Brother Jose Ventilacion, (another Filipino highly paid Minster expert in deceit and lies and twisting of historical facts and misinterpreting the Holy Scriptures to deceive) in February 1984, propagation work began to pick up and no less than ten of the converts in the locale that year were Germans. (married to Filipinas)

Since 1989, the succeeding resident ministers of Frankfurt Locale were assigned to officiate the worship services in the Church's first locale in the Netherlands. Dordrecht Locale started as a prayer group in October 1983 meeting at Brother Pieters' house in The Hague. (married to another Filipina?)

The Church opened its missions in Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark in 1984—-Geneva Locale and Gothenburg Group Worship Service in May, and the Copenhagen GWS in October. It gained ground in Norway with the formation of the Oslo GWS in June 1987 and in Scotland, with the Edinburgh GWS in August 1988. Other congregations planted in the 80s were Stockholm, Sweden (April 1985); and, Heathrow and Manchester, England (November 1989).

In the 90s the growth center was Germany where half of the 16 local congregations added during that period are found. These are Wiesbaden GWS (September 1994), Giessen Locale (January 1996), Heidelberg GES (January 1997), Berlin GWS (June 1997), Lubeck GWS (1997), Bremen GWS {April 1999), and Ramstein and Kassel Extensions (1999). Four are in the UK—Stratford Locale (1990, from London Locale, now Battersea), Camden Locale (September 1996), Bournemouth GWS (1997) and Newport, Wales GWS (June 1998). The rest are Rjukan GWS (August 1991) and Nottoden GWS in Norway (November 1992), Amsterdam GWS (May 1997) in the Netherlands, and Arlov GWS (1992) in Sweden. (Thanks to unemployment problems in the Philippines that drove many Filipinos in search of a greener pasture bringing with them their cult and living like parasites in cities that are well established and Christianized by Catholic Missionaries.)

In October 2001, the Church reached the Republic of Ireland through the Dublin GWS. Germany is still a growth center with three new GWS—Wuppertal, Bielefeld, and, the most recent, Munich. But the UK is catching up with four—Belfast, Northern Ireland; and, Birmingham, Portsmouth, and Norfolk, England where it all began 36 years ago. (Thanks again to the rapid influx of Filipino Migrant Workers.)

The Southern Europe Ecclesiastical District

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST (you mean the IGLESIA NI CRISTO®) in the Ecclesiastical District of Southern Europe straddles the Mediterranean Sea. As such., it covers Spain, France, Italy and Greece, as well as the Middle East countries in the east coast, Israel and Turkey. The ecclesiastical district also includes Portugal, Malta, and South Africa. Almost all of these countries played a significant role in the history of the Church built by Christ 2000 years ago (which you preached the ENTIRE CHURCH SUDDENLY DISAPPEARED in APOSTACY when Felix Manalo founded the Iglesia Ni Cristo in the Philippines in 1914?!). Israel, particularly its chief city, Jerusalem, is the cradle of the Christian faith (yes Christian faith, which non of them believed Christ is only a man). Greece, known in the past as the land of the Gentiles, is where the Church began to expand throughout the Roman Empire (and that Church is the CATHOLIC CHURCH) during the time of the apostles. Italy famous mainly for the city of Rome, the seat of the apostate Church. (The Seat of Peter's See which obviously is still STANDING to this time! The CHURCH never left Rome! It was only Felix Manalo's stupidity believing that the ENTIRE CHURCH apostatized! Where is that prophesied in the Bible? Where was it recorded in history? Any bible verse? Historical records? Historian?)

Restoration
But the true Church of Christ is back in the region (when did the Church leave Rome? Any historical records to back-up your stupid claims?). Three momentous occasions that happened in the mid-1990s in the cities of Rome, Jerusalem, and Athens highlight this return. (Anybody welcomed that "Church" which returned? There should be at least a welcome ceremony of that "return". But so far no one even recognize that "return". Only Filipino Migrant Workers lived like PARASITES in cities well Christianized by Catholic Missionaries. Why not go to Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Somalia where Christianity haven't been well rooted?!) They involved the registration of the Church's congregations in Italy, Israel, and Greece with these countries' respective governments. (and it was registered as "Church of Christ" or Iglesia Ni Cristo-Church of Christ"? And who was the founder written on that registration? Who is the OWNER?) A special worship service officiated by the Executive Minister, Brother Erano G. Manalo, marked each occasion. (Of course, the INC is Manalo owned Corporation! What a happy family. Collecting money without a lifted finger).

A day after the thanksgiving worship held on July 27, 1994 in Rome Locale's house of worship, Brother Erano signed a document declaring that the original Church of Christ had been restored in the ''Eternal City" where apostasy from the true faith began.  (Oh, so what biblical authority did Eraño Manalo had to declare that the "original" Church of Christ "had been restored"? What a fool! He fooled you and you all nodded like brainless followers.  That Iglesia Ni Cristo is OWNED by the Manalo's! And for sure, no Manalo or any of his paid ministers could challenge any Roman citizen openly in the streets of Rome that the Iglesia Ni Cristo is the original Church now restored! Hmmm how could be that the original church has to be in TAGALOG? Was the original Church in Filipino language?!! Really? Ha-ha-ha-ha!) In Jerusalem, on March 31, 1996, Brother Erano formally declared that God's work of salvation had finally returned to its original home. (So since the original Church had "finally returned to its original home" what's keeping you from transferring the CENTRAL CHURCH to Jerusalem? Why until now the Central is still in the Philippines! Is that te way how you wanted to RETURN the original Church to its rightly home? That claim sounds stupid to me! So the JERUSALEM CHURCH is now a LOCALE or a CENTRAL CHURCH?)  And, on May 10, 1997, in Athens, the Executive Minister officially declared the establishment of the Church's locale in that city, signaling the continuation of God's work of salvation to the Gentile lands that was started by Apostle Paul in the first century. (oh so had you converted any local Greek who is not even married to any Filipina to Manalo's Church? Or had anyone of your paid ministers preached to the Greeks that they are STILL CONSIDERED GENTILES by INC amidst the fact that they were CHRISTIANS from the time of the Apostle Paul until to this day?! If you claim something, why not substantiate it with concrete action! That's hypocrisy! That's a deceitful claims! Aren't you ashamed of that claims while your locale members are still majority Filipinos and other locals married to Filipinas!)

The Beginning
How the restoration began involved the meetings of Filipino brethren working in major cities in Italy (as I told you, this INC is managed purely by Filipinos. It's because it's a Proudly Philippine made church); France, and Spain quarter of a century ago. Whether they met by chance or sought out one another, they were drawn together by a common yearning for spiritual nourishment. One such chance meeting happened in mid-1981 at a plaza in MiIan, Italy's industrial and commercial heartland. A group of brethren led by Brother Danilo Lu (another Filipino Migrant Worker) agreed to start holding group prayer meetings, thus pioneering the Locale of Milan, which held its first worship service on December 14,1982. The same can be said of the early congregation in Spain. At Plaza CataIonia, a favorite gathering place of most Filipinos in Barcelona, (I told you) Sister Eufrosina Vargas first met Sister El- vira Pascual in 1979. Together with Sister Purificacion Florencio, the three held the first prayer meeting in Barcelona at the residence of Sister Purificacion. (all Filipino Migrant Workers) Eventually the prayer group grew and was given official status by the Church by the Church Administration (in Manila? in Jerusalem? Where is your Central? I thought the original church was now returned to it's original birthplace in Jerusalem? Why is it that INC Central is still in the Philippines?). It received from the Central Office (in Jerusalem? or in Quezon City, Philippines?) tape-recorded sermons for the worship in service from 1980 until it became a locale in 1992. Locales such as Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Madrid, Spain, began in a similar way during the same period, so did Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel a little later. But it was not at all that easy. Along the way, there were obstacles and difficulties, which nonetheless failed to crush the brethren's spirit. (Satan is very much alive in your cult!)

But now in most locales, gone are the days of rented places of worship. Buildings have been acquired and refurbished appropriately. Gone too are the tape-recorded sermons during worship services. There are now ministers and evangelical workers attending to the spiritual needs of the brethren in the 32 local congregations in Southern Europe, grouped as one ecclesiastical district in September 2000. Indeed, the true Church of Christ, (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo) established in Jerusalem but was apostatized in Rome after spreading throughout the Mediterranean world, has come full circle. (So where is now the Central Church if the "true" Church has been restored in Jerusalem? And what proof do you have to confirm that the ENTIRE CHRISTIAN CHURCH apostatized? Any Biblie verses that such massive apostasy should take place? Any historical facts recorded? That INTERNATIONAL CHURCH must be well recorded during it's entire apostasy!  Any proof please?!)

MIDDLE EAST

Qatar and United Arab Emirates Ecclesiastical Districts

Dubai, UAE

It has been proven yet again that the dispersion of Filipinos to different parts of the world in search of better livelihood does not cause them to forget the land of their birth, their culture and even their faith. (I told you guys. This Iglesia Ni Cristo is a Filipino Church for Filipinos! Well, it's no surprise. It's FOUNDED by a FILIPINO ex-Catholic, now a FULFILLMENT of the prophesies recorded in 2 John 1:7 - the coming of a DECEIVER and the ANTI-CHRIST!)  Among the Filipinos who have come to work in Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, are members of the Iglesia ni Cristo. (See?!)  In spite of the dire need to earn a living, the brethren strive to carry on with their service and worship of God. The Church of Christ (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo) in Dubai started with the first prayer meeting held by 17 members in Satwa in March 1978. (1978?! But why is it that no INC church has been approved to this time 2014 by any of the Sheikhs?! Why is it that until now your cult is still hiding in private rooms and villas? Thirty-six years and you're still considered cult by UAE? What happened? Your ministers are useless parasites!) In just less than three decades, this number rapidly multiplied such that 11 local congregations were established one after the other in the United Arab Emirates, where there are now thousands of Church members. (most of your so-called "churches" now approved as locales are private rooms! Where are your Qatar, UAE locales are located? Not even mentioned in your website! Aha.. perhaps it's because your locales are still hunted by the authorities for preaching another fake version of Christianity!)

These local congregations are as follows: Ras Al Khaimah, established in 1980; Al Ain, 1983; Fujairah, 1985; Sharjah, 1987; Satwa, 1988; Abu Dhabi, 1990; Madina Bader, 1997; Deira, 1997; Mussafah, which branched out from Abu Dha-bi, 2002; Ajman, formerly an extension of Sharjah, 2004; and Karama, April 2005. Aside from these, there are a number of extensions and group worship services in other parts of the UAE. (all are hiding in private rooms and villas provided by their employers without knowing cults are merging there! Your paid ministers cannot afford to sacrifice their work and their lives for Christ! They are fake missionaries! They are parasites!)

Despite many difficulties and hindrances, one of which is the restriction of practicing a religion other than what is officially recognized in this part of the world, (well Catholics, Orthrodox, Anglicans, and some Protestant churches are recognized. The Jehovah's witnesses, Mormons, and perhaps your cult the Iglesia ni Cristo are considered by the State as FAKE VERSIONS of CHRISTIANITY, therefore they are BANNED and OUTLAWED!) the members of the Church of Christ (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo®) continued, and will continue, to serve God zealously and faithfully. (to serve the Iglesia ni Cristo and the Manalos) On May 11, 2006, the Deputy Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, officiated at the worship service of the Church of Christ (you mean the Iglesia ni Cristo®) in Dubai, which was held at a building called Christ Church (oh, why not Iglesia Ni Cristo? Did you put that caption "Christ Church in front of that building?) in Jebel Ali, Dubai. It was attended by more than 3,000 brethren.

Abu Dhabi, UAE
THE WORLDWIDE economic recession. has caused many brethren (Filipinos) to work in the Middle East. They endured leaving their loved ones behind and living in Foreign countries for years just to earn For the needs of their families. (They are not really missionaries compared to Catholic priests who are full-time workers!) Although there are many things that they are willing to sacrifice, there is one that they can never give up—their faith and membership (but no one of your paid ministers ever had willingly accepted death for the sake of Christ.  Money first before Christ!) in the Church Of Christ  (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo®). This kind of dedication led more than 7,000 members of the Church Of Christ ( you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo®) from all over the Middle East to be gathered in a worship service to God on ]uly 13, 2012, (only 7,000 in the whole of UAE? From 1978 you have only 7,000 attendees?) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This event was officiated by the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo Manalo at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre. This is the first worship service in Abu Dhabi that was officiated by the Executive Minister. (Manalo ensuring that flow of CASH will be added to his bank accounts! What a brilliant Family Corporation!)

Those who attended the gathering also witnessed two important events: the announcement of the establishment of a new ecclesiastical district in the Middle East (there are now two districts in that part of the world—the districts of Qatar and UAE); and the oath-taking of five ministers—Brother Raul Basco as district minister of Qatar, Brother Sarwan Singh as district secretary of Qatar, Brother Antonio Banez as district auditor of UAE, Brother Florente Ladrillo as district treasurer of UAE, and Brother Ieffrey Labasan as district secretary of UAE. This historic development shows the fast expansion of the Church in that part of the world, a proof that God until now fulfills His promises to His Messenger and His Church in these last days. (proof that the biblical prophesy of the coming of the deceiver and anti-Christ is now fulfilled in the Iglesia Ni Cristo of Manalo.)

Israel
THUS FAR, THE Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) (now you name the Manalo's Church accurately) maintain three local congregations in state of Israel—each one named after the city where it was established—to meet the spiritual needs of the (Filipino) brethren. These are the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa congregations, which are under the supervision of the Southern Europe Ecclesiastical District. (I thought you've rejoiced that the "true" Church has returned to its "original" birth place?! What's keeping the "RETURN" of the "true" Church from enjoying it's PRIMACY over all the locale Iglesia Ni Cristo® churches worldwide?! Was it a TRIUMPH that the "original" and "true" Church finally was brought home?! Is this the way how you TREAT the PRIMATE CHURCH of the Iglesia Ni Cristo® which has been brought back to Jerusalem? When are you making your JERUSALEM Church be the CENTRAL of the Iglesia Ni Cristo®?!)

Tel Aviv: The return of the true Church of Christ (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo®) to Israel, ending an 18 centuries-long absence due to the post-apostolic, false prophet-led departure from the true faith, began in Tel Aviv-Yafo. (So since the "true" Church of Christ has "returned" to its birthplace, the question is: WHERE IS NOW THE CENTRAL CHURCH? Is it in Israel or in the Philippines? What's keeping you from returning back the privilege and primacy of Israel as the MOTHER CHURCH of the "true" Church of Christ?! And have you ANNOUNCED in Tel-Aviv that the "TRUE" CHURCH had returned? Did they ANTICIPATE it's "returning" back? Any WELCOME CEREMONY from the Jews and Christians who have LONGED for the "RETURN" of the "true" Church?!) Lying on the Mediterranean coast, Tel Aviv-Yafo, the nation's main business, communications, and cultural center, is connected to Jerusalem in the southeast and Haifa in the north by railways aside from excellent roads. Yafo is the Joppa of Bible times. It is where foreign countries keep their embassies. (When INC members came to Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, did they find anyone professing faith in Jesus? What do people call them, lost Christians? Or just Christians? So is there any sense of "lost" for these Christians?! Did they rejoice when you "returned" back the "true" Church to them?  Did you assign an Israeli (not married to any Filipino woman) to head the ministerial position to this "returning""true" Church?!)

For it was by being assigned in the Philippine embassy in Tel Aviv-Yafo that the first Iglesia Cristo member to set foot on Israeli soil was able to do so (I told you so, it's a Filipino Church for Filipinos and their foreign husbands or wives). Not that Brother Samuel Angeles, (another Filipino) a radio operator- technician, and his family's arrival in 1979 was itself the start of the Church (you mean the Iglesia Ni Cristo) in Israel, Rather, the Tel Aviv Congregation traces its roots from the prayer meeting in his house at Gush-Itzion, Givatay-im, which was at first a family affair held by himself; his wife, sister, two children; and his sister-in-law. As one Filipino brother or sister, who came to work in Israel, joined them, their group soon earned the Church Administration's blessing for it to function as a group worship service. (of course, that's another sure revenue for the Corporation Sole of the Manalo clan.)

By 1981, the Tel Aviv GWS had grown to 15 worshipers (all Overseas Filipino Workers), listening to tape-recorded sermons sent by the Central Office in Quezon City, Philippines during their weekly gathering in the Angeles family's new residence (OFW residence) at 72 Weizmann St. The first time a minister (Filipino minister) preached personally to the Tel Aviv GWS was in July 1982 at their first true Holy Supper. (is there a fake supper)  During the occasion, officers were inducted, including Brother Samuel as head deacon. (Since 1982, your members are still worshiping inside private houses and villas and buildings! Is that the way the "true" Church was welcomed in its birthplace?)

Jerusalem: Amid the Gulf crisis events that Jed to the creation of the Jerusalem GWS on January 9, 1991 were concurrent with those of the Gulf War, which broke out a few days later. A year before the Gulf crisis, three sisters Araceli Pellas, Eliza Sison, and Delia Manuel (all Filipino Migrant Workers), who arrived separately in late 1989, met at a New Year get-together of Filipinos (I told you...) in Jerusalem. Some time later, after making acquaintance with Brother Leodegario Paguio (another Filipino), who had been head deacon since 1988, they enlisted at the Tel Aviv GWS.

In July 1990, Brother Donato Manuel and his wife, Sister Araceii, (the same Filipinos) were re-assigned in Jerusalem, ten years after their first stay in the city as officers at the United Nations field office. They got in touch with the three sisters and the five of them went by car pool in going to Tel Aviv-Yafo for the worship service. In early August, the brethren heard the news that Israel's neighbor Iraq invaded Kuwait. Travels of UN personnel, like the Manuel couple, were restricted and Israeli authorities tightened security and imposed a curfew. This gave the brethren a hard time commuting to Tel Aviv-Yafo. They saw the situation as an opportunity for them to organize a separate GWS.

They asked for the Church Administration's (why asked the Philipine  INC when the "true" Church already "RETURNED" to its BIRTHPLACE in JERUSALEM?) approval through a letter and received the reply on September 21, directing them to undergo a one-month trial. After the trial period, the brethren sent a favorable report to the Central Office (in the Philippines? I thought the "true" Church already "returned" back? What's keeping you from bringing back the Centrality back to Jerusalem?!) but had to wait until the next year for the final word. So they had to resume attending the worship service in Tel Aviv-Yafo. As the Gulf crisis worsened, Brother Donato Manuel and family at the UN's order, flew to Cyprus. Only four brethren were thus now left in the Israeli capital (only 4 remained? A "true" Church with only 4  Filipino Workers manning the "true" Church? Wow!) but it was not setback to the planned setting up of the Jerusalem GWS. The fifth member would return from vacation the following year hopefully to bring good news. And so Sister Eliza Sison (another Filipino) came back from the Philippines in early January 1991, carrying the letter of approval from the Church Administration, as well as hymnals, audiotapes of sermons, and official forms. On January 9, 1991, the JerusaIem GWS was born. Its birth was marked by the worship service held by five female members at 2:00 pm that Sunday in Sister Delia Manuel's place along Nof Harim Street, Yefe Nof. (only 5 members made up the "true" Church?! Wow, what a return!)

In April 1991, when the Gulf war was over, the Manuel family returned to Jerusalem and Brother Donato was appointed head deacon. On December 15, Brother Paterno See, the resident minister of the London Congregation, officiated the true Church Christ's (the true Church of Manalo-- the Iglesia Ni Cristo®) first annual thanksgiving service in Jerusalem in its modem history.

IMBES NA ANG ITURO NILANG DOKTRINA AY ANG MGA SALITA NG DIYOS, AY PANINIRA, GALIT, AT PANGHUHUSGA LABAN SA SIMBAHANG KATOLIKO ANG GINAGAWA NILANG PUNDASYON UPANG ANG ISANG TAONG NAGPAPADOKTRINA AY TULUYAN NG MAPOOT AT TULUYAN NA RING TUMALIKOD SA SIMBAHANG KATOLIKO.

KUNG NAPAPANSIN NYO PO, LAHAT NG MGA NASA LISTAHAN NG PANDOKTRINA NA ITO AY WALA SA BIBLIYA.
AT KAILANMAN AY HINDI DAPAT GANITO ANG GINAGAWA NILA KUNG TUNAY NGA SILANG KAWAN NI CRISTO.

DAHIL ANG ATIN PONG PANGINOON AY HINDI NAGTUTURO KAILANMAN NG PAGKAPOOT SA KAPWA, BAGKUS AY ANG ITUNURO NIYA AY PAWANG PAG-IBIG NG DIYOS!

Mateo 22:37-39

Exodo 20:7

Exodo 20:16
Huwag kang MAGBIBINTANG SA IYONG KAPWA.

(I certify that i really understand and wholeheartedly accept/have faith with and will obey all commandments of God that i heard in the time of bible studies)With the signature of the Bible student, meaning he/she AGREES with the statement above.
So, if youre interested knowing more about such things, dont hesitate to come in the locale nearest you, i know many may misunderstand the above lessons that's why it is important that you can attend bible studies in our locales.
And to the brethren, this will be a reminder for us about the lessons being taught to us, and before we get baptized, we signed the statement saying that we really understand and accept and will obey the commandments of God, in addition to that, we also recited a promise in the time of instruction of the minister to the candidates just before baptism, and we promised it to GOD, not to the "Manalo" and even to church...

Sasagutin natin ang kanyang post issue by issue!

Purihin natin ang Ama(Praise to the Father)
Mabuhay sa pag-ibig ng Anak(Live by the love of the Son)
Taglayin ang Espiritung Banal(Receive the Holy Spirit)
Ang DIOS ay lagi nating sambahin. (Let’s worship always GOD forever)
Amen

Purihin natin ang Dios Ama(Praise to the God the Father)
Mabuhay sa pag-ibig ng Anak(Live by the love of the Son)
Taglayin ang Espiritung Banal(Receive the Holy Spirit)
Ang DIOSAMA LAMANG ay lagi nating sambahin. (Let’s worship always GOD the FATHER ALONE)
Amen

But until then, your opinion is just a waste of time!

Bakit ba may bonus tuwing Pasko? Bakit may Christmas Break?

Yung magdarayang manggagawa. Hindi iyong kapatid. Yung kapatid, magkamali man, eh hindi sinadya. YUNG MINISTRO, SINASADYA.

Does it change the truth that the Catholic Church is the REAL CHURCH OF CHRIST which your own OFFICIAL MAGAZINE attested? Gusto mo ipamukha ko sa iyo? Heto, basahin mo!

" Because we believe that there is only one true God, the Father, thus, Jesus is not the true God, but the Son of the one true God. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself attests that He is indeed a man in nature:

“As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.” (John 8:40 NIV, emphasis mine).

Thus, we reject the teaching that Christ is God."

1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

John 5:18

John 10:33
The Jews answered him [Jesus], saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. (And again Jesus being a righteous man never retracted their accusations because HE KNOWS WHO HE WAS!)
 Mark 14:61-62
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?  And Jesus said, I Am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

John 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

"Many Biblical scholars[7][8] believe that "Babylon" is a metaphor for the pagan Roman Empire at the time it persecuted Christians, before the Edict of Milan in 313: perhaps specifically referencing some aspect of Rome's rule (brutality, greed, paganism). Some exegetes interpret the passage as a scathing critique of a servant people of Rome who do the Empire's bidding, interpreting that the author of Revelation was speaking of the Herodians - a party of Jews friendly to Rome and open to her influence, like the Hellenizers of centuries past - and later, corrupt Hasmoneans, where the ruler of Jerusalem or Roman Judea exercised his power at the pleasure of the Emperor, and was dependent on Roman influence, like Herod the Great in the Gospel according to Luke.
In 4 Ezra,[9][10] 2 Baruch[11] and the Sibylline oracles,[12] "Babylon" is a cryptic name for Rome.[13] Reinhard Feldmeier speculates that "Babylon" is used to refer to Rome in 1 Peter 5:13.[14] In Revelation 17:9 it is said that she sits on "seven mountains",[15] typically understood as the seven hills of Rome.[16][17][18][19][20] A Roman coin minted under the Emperor Vespasian (ca. 70 AD) depicts Rome as a woman sitting on seven hills.[21]

According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, "The characteristics ascribed to this Babylon apply to Rome rather than to any other city of that age: (a) as ruling over the kings of the earth (Revelation 17:18); (b) as sitting on seven mountains (Revelation 17:9); (c) as the center of the world's merchandise (Revelation 18:3, 11–13); (d) as the corrupter of the nations (Revelation 17:2; 18:3; 19:2); (e) as the persecutor of the saints (Revelation 17:6)."[22]

But the true Church of Christ is back in the region  Three momentous occasions that happened in the mid-1990s in the cities of ROME, Jerusalem, and Athens highlight this return.- IglesiaNiCristoWebsite (emphasis mine)

So ALAM NA! Salamat po!

One Pope! Many journalists!  One guy tells something, the media will say something. One good seed sown, weeds grew and choke them. So that what's picked up by harvesters are fruits of weeds.

That's what happened to Pope Francis' comments on possible salvation of Atheists... his words were picked up wrongly and circulated misinformation which the Pope DIDN'T SAY!

What's their agenda? Well... they hated the Catholic Church.  Much  more the Pope. So even though they aren't directly interested on the Papacy and what the Pope is saying, they are very much interested on how they can distort his message and circulate misinformation.   But the TRUTH never will be heard.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo® (INC-1914) didn't spare that temptation.  The headlines in HuffPost"Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics" went viral like a bushfire and was immediately picked up by anti-Catholics awaiting for an ambush to the Pope!

It wasn't surprising for the Iglesia Ni Cristo® to pick up such a juicy news because for the past 100 years of Manalo's cult, it was FOUNDED in BIGOTRY and ANTI-CATHOLIC rhetoric.  All their might, they had attacked the Church of Jesus Christ-- the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ accusing her of apostasy to accommodate FELIX MANALO's claim as "GOD'S LAST MESSENGER" which a contradiction to Christ claim to be final and climax of all prophesies.

Here is "What Pope Francis really said about atheists" from CatholicVote, let me quote the first few paragraphs by Stephen Kokx

Pope Francis raised a lot of eyebrows Wednesday after saying all people who do good works, including atheists, are going to heaven.

At least, that’s how the Huffington Post interpreted Pope Francis’ Wednesday morning homily.

Here’s what Pope Francis really said about atheists:

The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace. If we, each doing our own part, do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter that so much. We must meet one another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe, Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good: we will meet one another there. [Read more here]

Apparently, HuffPo doesn’t understand the difference between redemption and salvation because here’s how they reported on the pope’s remarks:

Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists…

Of course, not all Christians believe that those who don’t believe will be redeemed, and the Pope’s words may spark memories of the deep divisions from the Protestant reformation over the belief in redemption through grace versus redemption through works.

Reuters interpreted the pope’s comments in a similar way:

Atheists should be seen as good people if they do good, Pope Francis said on Wednesday in his latest urging that people of all religions – or no religion – work together…

He told the story of a Catholic who asked a priest if even atheists had been redeemed by Jesus.

“Even them, everyone,” the pope answered, according to Vatican Radio. “We all have the duty to do good,” he said.

“Just do good and we’ll find a meeting point,” the pope said in a hypothetical conversation in which someone told a priest…

Francis’ reaching out to atheists and people who belong to no religion is a marked contrast to the attitude of former Pope Benedict, who sometimes left non-Catholics feeling that he saw them as second-class believers.

No more than an hour went by and an inquisitive Presbyterian friend of mine emailed me with a link to the HuffPo story. “So doing good on its own is enough for salvation in Catholicism?” he asked. In response, I sent him two links that clarified the pope’s words.. continue reading...

The Iglesia Ni Cristo® isn't after the truth. They LIED in order to win converts. And the Father of Lies, the Deceiver is very satisfied with them. His reign resides in them for their FOUNDER FELIX MANALO is the Anti-Christ according to 2 John 1:7.

Praise God, we are Catholics! Even the Iglesia Ni Cristo® of Manalo is following him!

Genesis 3:15
"I will put enmity between you and the woman (MARY), and your seed and her (MARY'S) seed: she  (MARY) will crush your head, and you will lie in wait for her (MARY'S) heel"

Revelation 12:1
"And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman (MARY) clothed with the sun, and the moon under her (MARY) feet, and on her (MARY) head a crown of twelve stars".

"HAIL, FULL OF GRACE!"-Luke 1:28

"FULL OF GRACE", babaeng PUNUNG-PUNO ng GRASYA!

Basa...
"That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Ayon pala!

FORBES: POPE FRANCIS 4th WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL PERSON

Pope Francis listed among Forbes most powerful people

Rome Reports - Forbes Magazine has published its annual list of the world's most powerful people. Among the top 5 is Pope Francis.

In fact, the Pope is the only non political figure in the top ranking. He came in at number 4, just ahead of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. As the spiritual leader of one sixth of the world's population, Pope Francis leads a Church with approximately 1 billion people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin came in at number one, followed by U.S president Barack Obama. China's president Xi Jinping, came in at number three.
